Your worldview strikes me as horridly naive and semi-dimensional. Think about what you write, because there isn't much more irritating than some guy who thinks he's got the "perfect" argument, or someone who arrives at all their conclusions in five minutes and refuse to budge.
However, if you've got a question, like say, "Why were our meat-eating ancestors healthier than us garden-munchers?" you'll probably get a better reception. |

| well, westerners in general (and americans in particular) aren't exactly garden munchers today. we eat TONS of meat. i dunno how it compares to days of yore, but i'd be surprised if it was less. so psycomonkey's argument is not only nonsensical but based on a false premise. |

| And we dont really take into account generations of diet and breeding. Some people dont do well with red meat, some people dont feel right without some form of animal protein in their diet. |

I'll bet that a lot of it has to do with the methods of meat preperation (vegetable oils, trans-fat that results, etc), and the quantities of meat as a ratio of of one's total diet, which will likely often cut off other better-for-you foods.
Also, high income postindustrial economies usually involve a lot of sedentary lifestyle.
The combination would create a bunch of fat people, I'd wager. |

Yep. In older times, you tracked that animal down, you killed it, you cut its skin off, you hacked it into cookable bits, you cooked it, and THEN you ate it.
Nowadays, you hear, "Please drive through!" _________________ A person's character is their destiny. |

I think part of the problem is that restaurants offer 18 oz. Porterhouse steaks, 16 oz. T-bone steaks, 12 oz. Prime Rib or 10 oz. New York Strip steak, but they don't offer anything much smaller than 6-8 oz.
I don't eat tons of meat and I don't think the general populace eats as much as we are lead to believe. I think the important thing in any diet (no, not as in losing weight) is balance. I would be very happy with a 3-4 oz steak (or piece of chicken, pork, fish, etc.) and an accompanying collection of startches and vegetables.
One of the things I hated most about the UK is that they don't understand the concept of a salad the same way we do in the US. Over there, "salad" is the stuff that comes on your burger, essentially what we call garnish. Thank god my mom worked for the AF and we could eat at the American restaurants on Base. |

I don't think a lot of people eat too much meat, lily. I think they eat a hell of a lot more starches and breads than our ancestors did. We don't eat as many veggies, yes. But I really don't think that lack was taken up by meat. I know I can easily go all day eating cheap food that has neither meat nor veggies contained therein. The cheapest foods out there are things like ramen noodles and cold cereal, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I have read that the less processed your food is, the better it is for your body. _________________ A person's character is their destiny. |

Oh, I'm not sure if people are aware, but the US government came out with a new food pyramid:
Hopefully the juxtaposition of the grains and fruits/vegetables will change the way Americans think about starches.
I can't find images of them, but I would like to point out that this one is a lot closer to the French and Mexican (I think) food pyramids, although it doesn't include alchohol. |

I thought they had some new tetradhedron of doom that was so complicated that only the 4 richest kings of europe could afford the de-encryption software to figure out the proper diet.
But its fun and simple to use. |

just sayin'. |
This is kind of like when an abstinence advocate pops in a thread about safer sex. |
Cause, y'know, they're obviously not entitled to a dissenting opinion. |
I'm not sure how you got that from my post. _________________ "Whatever afflicts thee, their asses I shall kick"

That's theoretically what you're supposed to eat each DAY, not at every meal.
The things at the top of the pyramid, though shouldn't be eaten very often or should be avoided entirely.
Also what they don't mention is how much is in a "serving". It varies from category to category, so you need more than just the chart to know what you're "supposed" to eat.
Here's the old food pyramid, if anyone wants to compare:
Goes from 5 categories of food to 10 and adds daily exercise as a part of a healthy lifestyle. |
