Just because they dressed it up nice and made it work almost passably well doesn't mean it's not still malware.

I don't really see how it's any worse compared to a Linux (apart from it not being free and opensource) or iOS (apart from it not being Apple).

You don't have to compare it to anything else, it's perfectly capable of being malware all on its lonesome. And Apple is even worse, especially with the full-OS scale DRM type shit, and linux is just a kernel. I have no particularly loyalty to a kernel.

One problem is that Microsoft has total control over Windows. That means they have total control over your computing. Windows 7 is one of the least terrible things Microsoft has ever made (although it doesn't really live up to my standards of usability, and there's no real way to change most of the things that I want to change, and there are inherent flaws that prevent the addition of nigh-essential functionality), but who's reviewed the source code to verify that they didn't put in any backdoors? What's the extent of their collaboration with the NSA? You have to take their word for it. That's all you get.

I must admit that partly I just hate and mistrust them for their past (and current) business practices, the way they leverage their advantage in slimy underhanded ways that merely serve to make life harder, but their new business practices are far from reassuring. The xBox One illustrates this fairly well, I think.

Windows 7 is usable. It's a cumbersome son-of-a-bitch that leaves me feeling a bit paranoid, but I could live with it fairly peacefully if I had to. Due to its duopoly with Apple on certain things, some people have to. That's about all I can say for it.

"There are things I don't really like about it, and who's to say it's NOT spyware?" aren't really grounds for calling it malware. Please tell me you're not going to start using 'M$' instead of MS from now on.

nope

It's malware because it's software that spreads in a malicious way.

The same way they got involved in Linux via SELinux kernel modules. If they're going to use it, or if you're selling internationally where other countries agencies can use it, they're going to make sure they know the vulnerabilities. At the very least, they want to patch out the vulnerabilities in their own copies.

And... Microsoft has completely reversed course on all those things people hate about their XBone plans. Well, except for some of the Kinect bits.

Xbox One Will Not Require Internet, Restrict Used Games

Quote:
Contrary to the details announced earlier this month, Microsoft has now confirmed news originally reported on Giant Bomb that Xbox One will not require an internet connection to play offline games or need to check in every 24 hours; instead, internet will only be required when initially setting up the console.

Quote:
Xbox One will also no longer restrict used games, and will instead allow discs to be exchanged in the same way they are on Xbox 360. There will be no additional restrictions for trade-ins or lending games to friends. The system is also no longer be region locked and all downloaded games will function the same way whether your console is connected or not.

I didn't know you could pedal a bicycle that fast in reverse, Microsoft.

Edit: DAMN YOU CTREES. DAMN YOUUUUUUUUU

According to an Ars Technica article which now has three times more text in the updates than the original story, the whole Family Sharing thing is gone too.

I don't think I've ever seen a major company reverse things so quickly and totally like that. I mean it's good they are listening to their customers but WOW. I'm glad they decided to change things, though, I was tired of all the gamer tears clogging up my internets.
