No. Only if you extrapolate from human physiology, which is a completely preposterous thing to do with a mythological blend of daemon and fć that probably isn't even a member of Hominidae.

and now I'm laughing at a mental image of a 'biologist' reacting the same way to a chameleon that got lighter when it moved to a light patch of bark in the sun

...okay, so chameleons tend to turn darker colors when they have an opportunity to absorb heat, but perhaps it was already too hot, or was calming down after a stressful experience...

or sun-bleached hair

or cuttlefish
when we see a cuttlefish change color, we may not know exactly how that works, but we don't argue with the results

... not to say that the whole "dark elf" thing isn't problematic

but we can probably blame Christianity for most of that

Elf - Wikipedia wrote:
In medieval Scandinavia, Snorri Sturluson wrote in his Prose Edda of ljósálfar and dřkkálfar ('light-elves and dark-elves'), the ljósálfar living in the heavens and the dřkkálfar under the earth. The consensus of modern scholarship is that Snorri’s elves are based on angels and demons of Christian cosmology.

there are plenty of poc in fantasy realms, they are all just vicious orcs or disgusting goblins or ruthless dark elves or some other creature of indelible immutable evil, jeez

Everyone knows that the poc of fantasy worlds live in the tropical or desert regions, unless of course they're traveling merchants, then they're 100% guaranteed to try and cheat you over. Unless they're supposed to be some sort of Asian equivalent, then they must secretly martial arts masters.

Well unless Dark Elves are related to cuttlefish we can only assume their skin works like all humanoids.

Hair does become lighter in the sun but he wasn't freaking out over the hair.

Though a cuttlefish related race would be freakin sweet. I'd play it.

why

I'm having trouble making this connection

why should the daemonfć work even remotely similarly to an anthropocentrically selected and genetically tiny offshoot of the great apes

especially when canonically they don't. We can't argue with the what just because we don't know the how.

(I'm a big fan of xenofiction that features truly alien aliens. None of that Star-Trek-they're-exactly-like-us-except-for-this-one-thing-that-highlights-some-human-social-issue crap for me.)

Because someone has yet to make a good biological write up that proves otherwise? Mind you, I'm not the biology professor here. I couldn't care less if elves are related to humans, squid or aliens.

One day I will have my underwater MMORPG. <3

aaaaaand you've lost me

I have no idea what you're talking about here

Ignoring the mythological element (because really these things can function however the myth crafts them), you support completely unsubstantiated claims until a scientific paper refutes them? Simply because there is no paper?
Surely that's not what you meant.

or maybe you're saying that we should
* take one point of data (selected arbitrarily out of a sea of points)
* take another point of data
* notice that the second point doesn't match up with the first point
* reject the second thing simply because it doesn't match up with the first singular data point
** unless there is already a "write up" that "proves" that we shouldn't reject the second data point?

Or maybe you're getting hung up on categories?

Why are you constantly ignoring the rest of what I've written?

like what

this?
Quote:

they aren't related to cuttlefish, but elves are canonically based on daemons and fć

so I suppose they might be expected to be similar to daemons and fć, rather than similar to apes or cuttlefish

I wasn't saying elves were like cuttlefish; I was pointing out that different species change colors for different reasons, and giving a concrete example.

Or this?
Quote:
I'm not the biology professor here. I couldn't care less if elves are related to humans, squid or aliens.

because this doesn't modify the other statement in any way

you still said that other thing

and that other thing still makes no sense to me

so I responded to that other thing

Quote:

and it will be glorious

So, what with The International 4 and it's berjillion dollar prize pool going, I decided to finally check out DotA 2 and give it a try.

I... I just don't get it.

I started it like I started LoL, watching a couple pro-games. But the spectator mode is just bad, most of the information you want to see front and center is hidden behind tabs that you can only see if the casters randomly decide to look at it, and the speed, size, and range of various champions makes effective camera work nigh on impossible. The cluttered and muddy art design doesn't help either.

But I thought, hey, it can't be as bad to play as it is to watch. But it is. MOBAs as a genre tend to be impenetrable, but DotA takes it to a whole new/old level.
