I figured it was that creativity inspired by a broken heart strikes a chord with an audience better than creativity inspired by happiness/fulfillment.

But mostly the last panel was just tee-hee.

It seems to me that most pop music nowadays falls into two categories: rich, wishy-washy white kids singing about unrequited love, or poor, black kids singing about how their boyfriends are sleeping with some other woman. This is why I don't listen to today's pop music.
