Everyone in this cartoon is pathetic, including God.

"pathetic" means distasteful in my book -- or, at least, uncomfortably sad and incomprehensibly helpless, i guess...

is that how you view all of the characters?

Slick is so incomprehensibly helpless, he's like a lost puppy, it is cute.

The only thing about Slick that I would categorize as pathetic in this strip is his attempt at hiding his excitement.

It's amazing how compliments affect us. Well, me, anyway. Smile I don't forget them quickly.

The dragon hasn't been terribly pathetic that I remember.

pathetic literally means "arousing sympathetic emotions", from the root pathos.

the negative connotation is just something recent.

...which is not really relevant since no one in this thread seems to be using your less recent connotation. Wink

Ah that's right, I forgot about the dragon and Buddha.

At certain times yes.

The loser in a strip changes constantly, but so far everyone has been one except Buddha... and possibly the Dragon.

ok. just interested in whether that's kind of what you meant or not.

again, for curiosity's sake -- not trying to "prove" you wrong or anything (it's just opinon) -- where/when has god struck you as pathetic?

Funny you should ask. I was just perusing the archives today and saw this series where God acts like a whiny baby.

cool, in terms of a considered response...but i don't know if i understand the 'whiny baby' assessment.

i recall the story arc...and he's mocking the devil in the devil's absense...and maybe he's mocking the devil "harder" out of loneliness (maybe), as slick is guessing...

...but i don't understand the 'whiny' aspect that you understand it.

i don't actively disagree, i just don't 'get it' -- i'm open to more of an explanation.

It seems rather pathetic to me for a person to spend his time mocking another and then pine for that person when the person is not around. Either you can admit that you like who or what he is and that he completes you, or you give the impression to everyone else that you think he is a "punkass bitch" while secretly missing him. It's the facade that I find pathetic. When the Dragon suggests that god might be the one with problems, the devil says "yeah! no! huh?" God can't even maintain his puppet character he's so apparently lost.

I'm sure the judgment of patheticalness is a purely subjective thing, so it's one of those judgments people will disagree upon. I just found God's duplicity in this series similar to Slick's in the comic we are discussing in this thread. Slick ought to admit his excitement at his first compliment. God ought to admit that he needs the punkass bitch if only to have someone to call a punkass bitch.

But, the god character, to me anyway, is pathetic in a grander sense. Mocking is not really a mature way of dealing with conflict. Sure it's friggin' hilarious in a comic strip, but mocking is kind of a punkass bitch thing to do, at least in my book.

I will grant to you that, generally, the God character is portrayed as being put-together, wise, positive, and good. He is rarely portrayed in an obviously pathetic sense in this strip.

The dragon wins, as far as I am concerned. Smile

Oh, and I really didn't mean to take over this conversation. I just thought the coincidence of your question and my reading today was funny. Please, Brain.Damage, present your example if you have one.
