I cheated and bought a pack of mulling spices. Just heat on low for half an hour or so and strain.

I am quite convinced that mulled port could be the pinnacle of heated alcoholic beverages.

well, part of that is because port is a bit sweeter and thicker than regular wine - you could try adding some honey to your mulled wine, and see how you like that. (my eyes have been opened to the advantages of adding a bit of sweetness to mulled wine.)

I always start off thinking I'll make the mulled wine dry and spicy, but by the end I keep making it more sweet (brown sugar and honey). When it is hot and sweet, even the cheapest wine is tasty. I put in some brandy or triple sec and a dash of szechuan peppercorn along with more traditional spicings. By the time I've got all the flavors evened out I'm more than a little looped.
