As far as reason goes, I've seen Hobbes give Calvin some very honest yet entirely erroneous advice, even some advice that might sound wise in some way but could never work in reality. Calvin’s math homework for example, “Imaginary numbers.” Way to make the kid fail at school Hobbes.

Tigers aren't known for math skills, after all.

In the end he is a part of Calvin after all, so he's only as potentially intelligent as Calvin is.

and also only as potentially evil. which is not so much (even though calvin tries to be actively evil, from time to time).

i wouldn't say i've got c&h memorized, but i've read all of them at least once, and i agree with twosods - hobbes doesn't pick on calvin. i would go further - hobbes does not even attempt to be evil. sure, he pounces on the kid when he gets home and they do a fair amount of rough-housing - but it's certainly not in any deliberate attempt to hurt calvin, in any sense of the word.

"evil" and "mischievious" are not identical.

Hurling a water balloon at Susie Derkins isn't evil. Rocks would be.

love your costume.

and true - although i could have sworn calvin had some plans for world rule. that one perhaps gets a too-ready classification as 'evil'.
