congratulations(?) ctrees - a raise is always good (and knowing that your job is secure is even better), but knowing how bad things are for your colleagues must be hard.

I did almost stick this in the mixed bag thread, but as I've previously posted about the issues in our branch in the horrors thread, I felt comfortable putting my raise here. It's a good thing in the middle of a lot of fucked things.

Two things about my class.

I didn't finish the project we were working on. I need internship credits to graduate.

My teacher is offering me internship credits to work over the summer and finish my project if I would like.

It won't give me the professional advantage of interning at a job, but it will get me through with the classes, plus I'd like to see if this thing can actually work.

I know that feeling. I did an internship at a medical physics lab and, although I was in "lackey" status instead of being in the drivers seat, the question of "did this end up being useful?" certainly lingers.

We're making a simple lead tester out of e.coli to glow red in the presence of lead.

Does it glow on its own, or do you have to hit it with light or something?

I'm thinking never-ending glowsticks. A tube of trypticase soy broth, some E. coli, and lead shavings... shine on you crazy bacteria!

At work today all my cool Star Trek stuff came! Soooo I spent my entire lunch hour running around shooting my phaser at everybody I knew. One of my coworkers told me this was the loudest she's ever seen me.

Took pictures!!

Now you can walk around work, point at anybody wearing a red shirt, and say "You, come with me. I hope your insurance is paid up."

You know what... I think it might require U.V. light.

It's a red fluorescent light, so I'd imagine the light would be necessary. I wasn't working on the portion with the light though so I kind of zoned out on it. I was making sure the lead was taken in and kept with in the cell.

After being unemployed for six months, and having several prospective jobs fall apart on me in numerous stupid ways, I may be having some good luck.

The only question is, will the new boss send me to Montana for a few months to do some cruising work, or keep me in Portland? Hoping for the latter.

Long term, I should end up in Portland either way. I'm just trying my best to be patient and not ask about money.

maybe it's just me and my unrequited wanderlust, but I would love to have a job that sent me to some new place for a few months.

It gets old fast. The vast majority of my possessions have been sitting in my sister's garage for about a year now because I simply can't justify or afford moving it all.

I want my books back dammit.

I've thought about doing a travel practice when I graduate, called a locum tenens. You take contracts for anywhere from a week to a few months, and you can say, "I want to be around NYC. What do you have in the area?" They pay for your housing, and sometimes even a car. The pay is good and you can spend your free time exploring new cities.

The upper administration of the university called me up and offered to fix a problem my group of labs has been having. It requires a certain level of sacrifice on their part. When I expressed my pleasure and appreciation, they said, "no, no... we've been trying to think of a way to express our gratitude for the great job you've been doing leading the group and being our favorite person!"
