Played an open mic night last night with a slightly older audience than I'm used to (average age was probably mid 50's), and I decided to play War Pigs (just me with my acoustic guitar). Before the song ended, middle aged women were clapping along and dancing, a drummer joined me and rocked it, and an 80 year old woman blew me a kiss.

God damn that was fun.

I've been dealing with some neurological pain issues for a few years now, I've bitched about it on here enough that most of you are probably aware, but after years of my neurologist getting frustrated with treatments not working, over-medicating me with inappropriately large doses of narcotics, getting me addicted, getting concerned and cutting me off, forcing me into withdrawal, and then repeating the whole cycle a few months later... I've finally found a specialist in pain management willing to see me and he already has the situation managed better than it's been in a long time.

That's all just semi-relevant background info for my actual post, though:

I was at the pharmacy picking up my new drugs the other day and after paying the pharmacy tech leans in an whispers that she really hope this works and that she's been praying for me. The fact that I don't buy into prayer and religion aside, I was really touched that this person, who I paid so little attention to that she was a virtual stranger who I barely even recognized enough to identify her as a regular employee, actually cared enough to not only remember me and the things I'd been going through beyond the minimum required for her job but also cared enough that she thought about it/me outside of work and took the effort to do something she believed would be helpful, i.e. prayer. Maybe I've just become that cynical and self-concerned through all this (I know I'm nowhere near as empathetic as I used to be) but it surprised me to realize that some people out there are still that nice and caring.

It also sort of made me feel pretty bad because I remember being one of those people and that this experience has left me so self-centered that I can rarely find the energy to even give a shit about anyone other than myself... and I hate that about myself.

I bought a red jumper today (sweater in American) and now pretty much all I need to do is make some horns and buy some face paint for a Lil'E cosplay. I suppose I might need to get a pair of shoes, but I can't quite figure out what kind he wears because they're so simplified.

The sweater is really nice though, 100% merino wool on sale in the kids' section. It was from some kind of designer brand (whose mens stuff I remember seeing and wanting but knowing they wouldn't have my size). I think it was a fairly good buy at $40.

This is an old one, but worth sharing.

A few years back- hell, i don't even want to think about how long it's been, when I was living in Detroit, I turned left onto woodward at the north corner of the DIA, and made it all the way to the roundabout downtown, and around the roundabout (it has lights too)...

...All without hitting a red light.

I was flying on cloud nine.

I counted on the way back (didn't want to jinx it by thinking about it before) and it was 22 lights.

Aren't the light systems in big cities timed to make that sort of thing more likely? If they aren't, someone's dropping the ball. It sounds like a cheap way to improve traffic.

I guess it depends on how much monitoring equipment they have installed.

I don't understand. Do minor details of your brain state have a meaningful influence on the timing of traffic lights?

true, it's probably not canon but finally some of the female characters are getting to see some action in a zelda title.

In DC for the day, and all the House Republicans are FREAKING OUT about the Cantor thing.

But terrifying: "If Eric Cantor isn't anti-government, anti-spending, anti-Obama enough to insulate himself from grass-roots rebellion, then you've got to ask yourself: Who is?"

well, brat does have that picture of cantor standing next to obama, and he isn't strangling him or knifing him or even shooting him - so how anti-obama could he be, really?

apparently turnout was really low - ~7200 voters, so the difference was < 800 actual votes...can't seem to find numbers on what the usual number is.

I don't know, but the NYTimes is reporting that, though Cantor's pollster blamed Dems voting in the Republican primary, that the largest increases in voter turnout were in heavily Republican areas, not Democratic ones.
