Same here, you can only hope a real candidate survives until November, then vote lesser of two evils when they don't. _________________ The older I get, the more certain I become of one thing. True and abiding cynicism is simply a form of cowardice. |

according to my boss, independents can vote in anyone's primary here in california. i'll have to check that out.
i'm not too happy to have the primary so blasted early this year, but at least there is some hope that my vote may have some effect on the outcome. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

| No, I think most people not entrenched in the two party system would agree that it leads to things like voting for the lesser of two evils - a pitiful state for our democracy. |

indeed.
independents don't vote in primaries here, I was considering registering one way or the other, in an attempt to somewhat influence them. meh. _________________ Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS" |

The two rounds system is spread all over the world in various forms; it's very hard to build a stable democracy when one relies on a coalition of very hetereogenous parties (look no further than Israel or Italy for good examples). Granted, it's a far less democratic system, in the sense that not all walks of the population have a voice, but it works by and large better than any other so far.
It works for ole Europe (Belgium excepted ), India (biggest democracy in the world and taking into account caste vote) and most of South America.
One would agree, should every folks be internet-savy (a far cry), that a full representative system in countries where fair election is the norm would be a better system. Yet, as Switzerland (or Austria before that) shows, even that doesn't prevent nationalists parties, those feeding on fear, to prevail. _________________ Meu aerobarca esta cheoi de enguias |

| I think having runoff ballots would be a big step in the right direction. vote for your third party candidate without it being a so called "vote against" the preferential major party candidate. |

I'm a fan of the real parliamentary system, which gives rise to parties which are more nuanced and representative. Also, it's more difficult for any one party to ramrod legislation through, as it becomes harder for any one party to have more than 50% of the seats in parliament. It forces parties to work together, an obvious advantage over the two party system.
I'm definitely influenced by my time in Canada, but the system obviously also works in England. I think it's much less a question of "can a democracy survive" and more one of, since both function, which has the best results? Personally, I see us languishing behind much of the developed world socially. |
