It's taboo in polite society?

It's sad when "polite" = "American" and taboos follow from that. In US society, it's practically illegal and certainly considered disgusting or immoral to, for example, lounge around naked with your children. I'm getting to my point.

Now, although I'm not a native, I have lived in Finland for many years now and have adapted to its ways - and let me tell you, there's nothing less natural than wearing a towel in a sauna (you look stupid, quite apart from the hygiene issues), and in public swimming pools here, there's just a communal shower room and changing room, with saunas. In fact, there's a sign on the wall banning you from wearing swimming costumes in the sauna - again, health reasons (think of all the chlorine that's soaked into them - you want to breathe that in as it evaporates into the air?).

Now back in the UK, I imagine it's awfully like the USA. Individual cubicles, keep your costume on at all time (even in the shower - huh?) and if you happen to glance round the room, you must be gay, or at somebody else's children, you're practically a paedophile. So what would your morals say to sitting in a steamy room in a public place with strangers and young children naked all around you? It sounds a little like an orgy when phrased like that, but honestly, it's just hygiene, and people here don't bat an eyelid. What's more natural? Being afraid of *gasp* other people being naked anywhere near you, or not caring because, after all, everyone's more or less the same?

It's sick when the human body, the most basic thing that every person on the planet shares, becomes disgusting and taboo. I'm not advocating running through the streets naked (it'd be cold, apart from anything else, and heaven forbid anything happen to fashion) but seriously, even though porn is as publicly-avoided here as anywhere else, that's about where it stops. "Polite society" and "taboo" are one thing and maybe it applies fairly enough to porn, but when it reaches out and paralyses whole aspects of society, there's surely something wrong.

Erm. Sorry. </rant>

Not at any swimming pool I've gone to.

But then hey, I just grew up here, what do I know?

Well thanks for enlightening me. Glad to know there's something done even worse in the UK than in the USA (although at the moment, you could probably add "government data security" to that bundle). But seriously, you're saying US society doesn't have, hmm, modesty issues?

Of course it does, plenty, just not at public swimming pools, gyms, and the like.

I've never been too crazy about pornography myself (except for the really funny ones I have occasionally watched with friends), but I think it's kind of silly how taboo it is. Of course, I do understand the position of those who oppose pornography because of its treatment of women. I agree, it's pretty disturbing. But I don't think it's the main cause of this particular taboo. It's more about what filecore discussed. That is, how antsy we are about an activity we're biologically programmed to love and desire. Blame culture, religion, the government, I don't really care. It's just silly.

Same here - although once we came across a porno film on the internet called "Pirates", and it was basically a complete remake of "Pirates of the Caribbean", only with more, well, porn scenes. But they had a similar plot (if a porn flick can be said to have a plot), costumes, scenes, locations, the lot - they really made an effort to make it a proper film, like PotC, and not just a home video of some guy fucking his wife. It was rather well done, in fact, and quite amusing all the more for the amount of effort.

EDIT: Good lord, after a bit of searching around, I discovered that the porn version is indeed a proper film, and is in fact available on Amazon. There you go, isn't life strange.

Yes and no. I know a lot of people active in human rights and women's issues, and I don't approve of degrading activities or those that mistreat women (or men, for that matter). But when a woman chooses to act in a porn film, from her own interests/desire to make money/exhibitionism/whatever, then that's perfectly fine. If people want to be porn stars, and aren't forced into it, then more power to them. After all, it's just a market, like any other. If people want a product (within limit; I don't approve of harmful industries like hardcore drugs or weapons) and you're happy to provide it, then who can argue?

The really sad thing is ...I watched that movie as well, it has that really annoying blond girl (mostly cause she looks so engineered, big breast, big lips, kind of short but not too short) in it what was her name, jaaane...man I've become rusty I am forgetting names. Personally I found it pretty bad, too much story for a porn movie, too much glow/hazey/dream effect during those scenes of interest, also they were too short.

aha got it, jesse jane.

i kinda agree with filecore, (not that i approve running naked trough the streets..) being naked isnt weird, but pornography is more than just being naked. porno made the most natural human urge, the urge to reproduce, into lust. I dont have anything against pornography, but i can understand some people thing its a symbol of how... lust-y the world became.

... whirr?

lust didn't exist before porn? sex should have nothing to do with lust and has no purpose or meaning outside of reproduction? these are very alien ideas to me. please tell us more. like, for instance, when exactly the world became so lusty (which is a word and doesn't need hyphenated). and also which planet you are from.

it's "apocalypse" by the way.

I think he's just trying to say that pornography misrepresents sex in the real world. It does, but who cares? It's as unrealistic as any other genre of entertainment. The same can be said about action, comedy, drama, romance, and so on. Unless his post has religious connotations. I hope not. Because that's silly.

I enjoy being naked personally, I dont strut around naked though. I used to when I lived by myself though.

Something oddly relaxing about sleeping naked too.

What is?

EDIT: I was looking up and down for a typo, didn't realise you were referring to an avatar. Are we also going to spellcheck "ded chikin" too now? It's silly correcting avatars.

acapolypse does have a point - porn is more than naked people sitting around. i'm guessing that not a lot of finns are having sex in public saunas, surrounded by children and other strangers.

i guess that tends to be americans' hangup - too many people think nude=sex. there was a nude beach here in la jolla - it finally got shut down because too many people were sure there were all these orgies going on (there _was_ enough voyeurism that if there really _had_ been orgies, people would have heard about it). it's kind of sad - and also feeds into the idea that those with less-than-perfect bodies (fat, old, saggy, etc.) should keep them hidden away.
