I like the way his halo is deformed in the last panel, as well as the 'Omen' reference in panel 3. He must seriously have something up between himself and God to get nothing but violence and anger out of reading the Bible.

you'd think Seymour might have had this epiphany sometime sooner.

Then again, it's kind of typical of the absolute extreme that Seymour embodies, not to 'get' the basic contradictions inherent in the Bible.

Which then begs the alternate question, why does he suddenly "get it" now? Perhaps a persona shift for Seymour as we saw with Slick?

sometimes the way things hit you depends on your mood at the moment. seymour may have read those passages before, and been in a mood to think 'serves those unbelievers right, smite on, god!'. but this time, he was frightened and looking for comfort...and randomly hit on one of the smiting passages. and maybe he felt a little sympathy for the smitees, or at least the random bystanders, or maybe he thought it meant we are now in a period that got is doing some smiting .... or who knows? anyway, he was looking for peace and comfort, and he got reminded that god doesn't guarantee you are going to get that.
