Thanks for that Sam!

I almost didn't click it because I was afraid it would be more horrors. I am so happy to see something positive come out of all that death and destruction.

This event is fucked for multiple reasons. Like, completely fucked.

Islamic terror attack, guy was carved to death in front of a bunch of people, the murderers hung around and got video interviews and paraded in front of or on top of the body of the person they murdered, everyone stood around as gawping bystanders. Police arrived, but like most police there, they were unarmed. So the murderers continued to parade around the body of their victim for about 20 minutes while the unarmed police stood around without confrontation. Then armed police came in and the resulting confrontation was short because the gun-wielding man's gun backfired and injured him and not the person he was shooting at.

I get that unarmed police is a noble ideal but I am very concerned with how this played out.

I think all (trained) police should be armed - and this coming from a pacifist.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/22/canada-blood-donation-ban-gay_n_3320214.html

Quote:
Canada is lifting a lifetime ban that had prevented gay men from donating blood; but some restrictions will still be enforced.

The non-profit Canadian Blood Services, which manages the country's blood supply, announced Wednesday that the policy banning gay men from ever donating blood will end by summer 2013. The organization released a statement saying Health Canada, the national public health department, gave approval for the lifetime ban to be lifted and replaced with a five-year deferral period. Thus, gay men can donate blood so long as they haven't had sex with another man within the last five years.

Not perfect by any means, but still a step forward. Good going Canada, I'm proud.

So the freeway bridge just south of my house collapsed into a river, sending cars into the water...

Remember the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker who saved that woman, and made everyone go, "huh, maybe sometimes the hitchhiker with an axe is the good guy?"

Yeah... he's been arrested, because authorities believe he killed a guy.

no scale on the detour map, but unless those blue bits are puddles, it looks like one hell of a detour. is thing going to screw up your getting to portland?

(ok, yeah, so there are bigger problems in the world, but....)

Quote:
The State Transportation Secretary said the bridge had a 47 sufficiency rating. The scale goes from 0 to 100, with 0 being the worst. A bridge with a rating

well....i guess this is one way to get the government to take infrastructure seriously. drive a truck into it.

It's supposed to screw up anyone traveling from Seattle upwards, I think.
