While that average wage at Costco is great, it's not like you can walk in off the street and get that. Many/most locations are unionized, which comes with automatic, set raises and seniority-based promotion. Getting over $20/hr is doable, if you've worked at Costco for over a decade. Starting wage when I was there (probably increased now) was $10/hr. Better than other large chains, not necessarily better than smaller retail chain.

Still, automatic raises are better than "probably not getting raises, ever" and the strong incentive to stay is certainly an improvement over the 100% turnover at places like Walmart/McDonalds. I guess what I'm saying is, retail unions are great, but an article like this should really give them a nod.

It sounds like the starting wage is $11.50/hr, but...
HuffPo wrote:
Costco has a reputation for paying its employees above market rate, with the typical worker earning around $45,000 in 2011, according to Fortune. Walmart-owned Sam's Club, in contrast, pays its sales associates an average of $17,486 per year, according to salary information website Glassdoor.com.

Costco also provides health insurance to a significantly larger percentage of its workers than does Walmart, the Harvard Business Review reported in 2006.

And this is an article with the CEO calling to raise the minimum wage over $10. Not that I don't think labor unions could use a shout out - they need all the positive press they can get - but it seems kind of clear that the culture at Costco is a little different.

I forget how much Costco is said to pay around here. In 2006, I think people were telling me it was $13 an hour, with benefits and decent working conditions. I also hear tht In-n-Out Burger pays a high wage too, in order to get higher quality employees.

My workplace hasn't raised the starting wage for non union employees for awhile. When I started, it was about three or four dollars more than other places, and there were at least 200 applicants or more per listing. Now they are only a dollar above, and there have been only 80 responses to the latest two listings. There aren't many hours either, and there are no benefits.

I haven't been in a different apartment complex in awhile, but I recall rent going up by $30 or $50 per month every year in the others I've lived in. My complex tries to raise the rent very little for low income peope, so rent goes up by $10 per month each year. In my current job I get a thirty or thirty three cent raise every year.

Around here, if you start at $8.00 and not $7.50, people think it's good. It's an utter shithole of a resort area that for over a century has depended upon low labor rates.

I still think grounding a president's plane was a little more ridiculous than punitively questioning a significant other of a main party to the scandal, but this is pretty petty.
