Touched on in another forum (an idiot governor was blaming violent video games), just going to quote it here:

Sure, Governor Bevin, you reap what you sow. But... what if what you're sowing is actually white supremacy?

I sure to feel better now that the president has defunded monitoring of domestic terrorists and instead focused on Muslisms.

I mean, can you imagine how the reaction would have been different if this guy was trained by ISIS?

Don't forget signing a bill making it easier for mentally ill people to buy guns.

Ah, but here he is today talking about the shooter's mental health problems and how they don't get the help they need.
Oh by the way their stealth Obamacare-killer tax bill also hurts programs and funding people need for mental health care.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

dude. clearly you are _helping_ the mentally ill by giving them guns. i mean, it just helps them feel like regular americans, because we all have guns!

and guns don't kill people, people kill people. we all know that.

yeah, someone commenting in the NYTimes yesterday had a whole thing about how the kid would undoubtedly be shown to be an addict of violent video games. because clearly that is the way you learn to shoot people, not by getting together to practice with real guns with people who have a list of people they think should be dead.

Then again, maybe that white supremacist guy is full of shit after all.
http://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2018/02/15/florida-school-shooting-suspect-nikolas-cruz-member-white-nationalist-militia-tallahassee-leader-say/341751002/

Quote:
Local law enforcement sources have not found a connection between accused Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz and a Tallahassee-based paramilitary group.

Leon County law enforcement sources told the Tallahassee Democrat that they could not find information linking Cruz, 19, to the Republic of Florida Militia, as claimed by the group’s self-proclaimed leader Jordan Jereb.

His comments to the Anti-Defamation League and The Associated Press set off a media firestorm Thursday at about midday that Cruz was connected to the alt-right, white nationalist group.

Hours after news outlets around the nation reported Cruz's alleged ties, Leon County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Grady Jordan told the Tallahassee Democrat investigative work did not yield any connections.

“We are still doing some work but we have no known ties between the ROF, Jordan Jereb or the Broward shooter,” Jordan said.

Jordan and other law enforcement sources declined to confirm whether they had spoken to Jereb, who is no stranger to Tallahassee law enforcement.

Cruz entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Wednesday, investigators say, with an AR-15 and opened fire, killing 17 people and injuring 14. He faces 17 counts of premeditated murder.

Jereb said Cruz was a member of the group and had participated in paramilitary training drills in Tallahassee.

In a brief phone call with the Tallahassee Democrat, Jereb said there was “No way to put a good spin on all of this."

“This is a negative situation,” he added before hanging up to speak with ABC News.

Jereb did not answer repeated phone calls following law enforcement officials saying they found little to lead them to believe Cruz was connected to the organization which has a scant following of around a dozen members.

In a profanity-laced post hours later on a social media site, an account bearing Jereb's name said the whole thing was a "legit misunderstanding," saying they have more than one member named Nikolas. He also said he not slept "for like 2 days."

Jereb, a self-described "right-wing extremist nut," faced charges in 2016 after threatening a high-ranking staff member of Gov. Rick Scott's office.

Jereb is known to ride a bike through neighborhoods wearing paramilitary garb and stand at the side of the road with an ROF flag. He has filmed numerous run-ins with law enforcement in Tallahassee in which he consistently tells officers when he is stopped, "I'm a free man traveling the land."

“Jordan Jereb, the leader of the Republic of Florida Militia (ROF), a white nationalist hate group that we have been monitoring, earlier today claimed that Nikolas Cruz, the suspect in the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, is a member of his group. Hours after claiming a connection to Cruz, Jereb said he had been misunderstood.

“On its website, the ROF describes itself as ‘a white civil rights organization fighting for white Identitarian politics, And the ultimate creation of a white ethnostate so we can be free from anti-white policies and have policies that reflect our values as white westerners. The ROF Militia is the armed forces of the Republic Of Florida.’

“Jereb initially claimed that Cruz was a member, that he had participated in one or more ROF training exercises in the Tallahassee area, and that he carpooled with other members from South Florida. Though the link was reported by several news organizations, the SPLC has not confirmed it.

“It may seem odd that Jereb would bring attention to his group by claiming a connection to Cruz, but Jereb has always been somewhat of a publicity seeker. In 2014, in fact, he wrote us to complain that we had not already listed ROF as a hate group. In April 2017, Michael Tubbs, the leader of the Florida chapter of the League of the South, a well-known hate group, wrote that Jereb ‘never misses a photo op’ and called him ‘a nut job who should be avoided.’

mueller has indicted 13 russians for interfering with american elections.
Quote:
In a 37-page indictment filed in United States District Court, Mr. Mueller said that the 13 individuals have conspired since 2014 to violate laws that prohibit foreigners from spending money to influence federal elections in the United States.

The indictment charges that the foreigners falsely posed as American citizens, stole identities and otherwise engaged in fraud and deceit in an effort to influence the U.S. political process, including the 2016 presidential race.
Quote:
The indictment lays out a highly sophisticated, well-funded, three-year-long scheme designed in part to put President Trump in The White House.

The Internet Research Agency, operating out of St. Petersburg, was described in the indictment as a hub for a sophisticated operation designed to reach millions of Americans to disrupt the political process in the United States. Its annual budget was millions of dollars; its stated goal was to “spread distrust toward the candidates and the political system in general.”

our leader, of course, immediately pointed out that this predated his candidacy and there's still no collusion. he did say "“We must unite as Americans to protect the integrity of our democracy and our elections”

we'll see how much of that he actually does.

Meanwhile, in the World.

Turkey sentences journalists to life

So far, par for the course in modern Turkey...except for one accusation:

Quote:
The convictions followed a months-long trial during which the prosecution alleged that the journalists sent “subliminal messages” via TV appearances and newspaper columns urging the overthrow of the government

Just saying that in case someone in power *cough*#TheDonald*cough* needs something against CNN.

Knowing the locals, it won't be tomorrow before the PRC allows such artefacts abroad again. Welcome to Xi'an it is nice city abd great, if pricey museum.
-----------

And no, something completly different, Syria.
Today's news are : Afrin's Kurds are making a deal with Hassad's regime to protect the city. If you followed the story so far, you know Turkey is currently attacking, and getting bogged down, the place.

I already mentioned that Turkey is putting pressure on US, and some US' allies, to sever her alliance with YPG, or else.

Now, before the real comedy begins, two more facts
1- Turkey is not alone on her assault on Afrin. They have allies of a dubious sort
2- On another front-line, and despite the rethoric, Russia is involved on the ground in Syria, sort of many of whom were killed during a recent fight were US bombed, hard, the Syrian attack on Kurds. This is making ripples in Russia. Officially, the Russian authorities says but 5 men were killed.

Not to forget Iran's involvement and the recent Israel attack (see Munich conference)

tl/dr and comedy time:
Should the Syrian's regime get involved against Turkey in Afrin, which is almost a given. Erdovan's charming personality will not allow him to back down and the situation will very likely escalate with Russia pressed from both sides (Syria and Turkey) to either not get involved (Turkey) or support her ally (Syria). NATO doesn't force allies to help in case of aggression, not sure Turkey will not try to force #TheDonald's hands in this. It'll be a tough job for US' Ambassador...except there is none currently.

Not Trump's fault for a change.

I wouldn't even dare to post this if not for my better half just asking me to explain, as best as I could the local situation after the news.

Meanwhile, across the pond, the Daily Mail appears to have fallen through a time-vortex and ended up in the mid-1700s.

A new study is out in the New England Journal of Medicine. It basically finds that when a bunch of NRA members all get together in one place, the gun accident and fatality rates drop significantly all over the country and especially in the state hosting the shindig.

During NRA conventions, gun injuries drop 20% nationwide—63% in hosting state
Quote:
When gun enthusiasts gather for the National Rifle Association’s annual conventions, rates of gun-related injuries and deaths drop by 20 percent nationwide—and a whopping 63 percent in the hosting state—according to an analysis published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

[...]

Though the analysis can only provide a correlation—not causation—Jena and Olenski suggest it may refute a common argument among gun proponents. That is, that gun accidents happen primarily in the hands of inexperienced users and that practice and training—promoted by the NRA—can greatly reduce or eliminate safety concerns and accidents, which affect thousands each year. In 2014, for example, there were 461 unintentional firearm deaths and 15,928 unintentional, non-fatal injuries, 1,960 of which involved youths.

In their analysis, Jena and Olenski concluded that the findings:

“...are consistent with reductions in firearm injuries occurring as a result of lower rates of firearm use during the brief period when many firearm owners and owners of places where firearms are used may be attending an NRA convention. Our results suggest that firearm-safety concerns and risks of injury are relevant even among experienced gun owners.”

[...]

Nationally, the study found that baseline injury rates dropped from 1.5 per 100,000 people during control periods to 1.2 per 100,000 during NRA conventions. It also found that declines in injuries were larger within hosting states, dropping from 1.9 per 100,000 to 0.7 per 100,000 during the conventions.

I guess being busy doing something else leaves less time for them to accidentally hurt or kill someone with their guns.

Let's all remember this the next time someone tries the "good guys with guns and training make us safer!" argument.

So, the upgrade.

It's been a while since internet is monitored in mainland China. By the end of this month, vpn will be blocked making connection to the outside world near impossible except for 'authorized' channels.

According to this article, Orwell's Animal Farm is banned, may be false, so is the letter N. Methink someone drank too much baijou watching Costa Gavras' Z and mixed up the writting.

But, for those who don't know, the most amusing banned picture is this fellow :

Threatening isn't it?

To understand the reason, here's why :

They look like twins don't they?

Suffice to say that the incoming "permanent leadership" #TheDonald loves so much is met by guarded silence here. Don't even bother to raise the subject unless you want people to avoid you like plague forever.

Sovie..Russia says she didn't do it

Well, there were one other case of attack with this toxin by private parties back in 1995. Also, sarin gas was locally producted and used by Aum Shinrikyo sect back in 95 to commit a terror attack in Tokyo's subway. So a case can be made by Sov (*darn*)...Russia for not being the source of this attack.

Otoh, only the rich get credit.

and anyway, putin had absolutely nothing to do with it. putin doesn't even know anything about it. or anything about anything that might have to do with american elections, because he's got way more stuff to think about right here in russia to worry about the rest of the world. besides - there are so many russians! any one of them could do it without him knowing about it.
