i guess that's it - these people were all in their homes, and staying off the computer and the phone.

apparently, if you have no electronic presence, you don't exist.

Cue the inevitable spiral of people blaming guns, defending guns and guns in general.

Hungarian election: Viktor Orbán wins second term as Jobbik support soars

The Guardian wrote:
Cas Mudde, assistant professor at the School for Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia, said Jobbik had achieved the strongest showing in the past few years for any far-right party in the EU and that the only far-right party on the continent that had performed better was Switzerland's People's party which won 26.6% of the vote

As for the Magyar Garda, you were right:
Quote:
But although the Hungarian Guard – who have been likened to Hitler’s brownshirts and Hungary’s infamous Arrow Cross which played an instrumental role in deporting Jews, Roma and other minorities to Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War – have been officially condemned and ostensibly extinguished, the Hungarian far-right remains well represented from paramilitaries to parliament.

Similar organizations – so similar in fact that it would be impossible not to suspect some real connection – to the Hungarian Guard are in precariously plentiful supply.

Back in 2011 FoxNews reported that Viagra might help fight cancer (it involved rodents). . .

Now, according new data based on observing humans, it's pretty much pointing in the exact opposite direction:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/08/viagra-skin-cancer-melanoma-_n_5107613.html

Quote:
Viagra, the trusted cure for erectile dysfunction, may be linked to an increased risk for one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer, according to the findings of a new preliminary study.

Researchers from a score of top medical universities analyzed data from a 2000 Health Professionals’ Follow-up Study on nearly 26,000 men, 6 percent of whom had taken sildenafil, more commonly known as Viagra. The group that had a history of Viagra use had roughly double the risk of developing melanoma than those who hadn’t ever taken the drug, while those who were currently taking the drug had an 84 percent higher risk of developing melanoma, said the preliminary study, released Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

I'm assuming at least part of the increase comes from those who have changed their lifestyles, namely being outside more, which to me says a lot of other things about our society and how many men view themselves and their own self worth.

I'm unclear on the connection between being able to get an erection and spending more time under the sun. Also, it's one thing to have a theory, and another to then assume it's correct and make a statement about what it says about society.

Sildenafil inactivates an enzyme that breaks down cGMP, if that enzyme has other functions in other parts of the body, or if cGMP has other functions in other parts of the body (it's unlikely its only effect is causing smooth muscle relaxation in the corpus cavernosum) then it could do all sorts of things. In fact, the enzyme sildenafil inhibits is all over the place. cGMP is also fairly active, including moderating several protein kinases (like PKG). So a physiological effect causing both boners and cancer could exist (assuming the correlation stands up to further scrutiny).

It could also be a third variable that increases the likelihood of both. Maybe people who prioritize enjoyment are more likely to both do things outdoors and try to maintain a healthy sex life. Who knows?

No one, yet, that's who. Razz

Well, I think it's easy to see how some men would become more socially active (i.e. go outside more) because Viagra "helped restore their manhood" or some other reasoning like that. I'm not trying to downplay anyone's legitimate feelings of inadequacy, but I can't help but feel the source of any sort of thinking that bases one's social acceptableness upon how virile they are or aren't is at the very least problematic. Basing one's self worth on external societal factors is arguably BS and no one should feel lesser about themselves because they "can't get it up", but there's sadly many who feel that way. Hell, the marketing has even used that as a selling angle: http://www.ispot.tv/ad/7Vd0/viagra-knowing-how-to-get-things-done

Okay, if we assume that a significant portion of the participants in the survey have those feelings, that's a possible explanation. It requires a lot of other assumptions though: that a large portion of the men experiencing ED felt this way, that feeling this way led to them being outside less, that alleviation of their ED made them feel more virile (as opposed to other feelings), and that feeling more virile led to a significant portion of them being in the sun enough to get melanoma. That's a pretty long list of things to assume in order to get from Viagra to skin cancer by way of socialization.

But there's no reason, yet, to accept it before any other explanation, including ones that are wholly physiological.

Hey now, I did say part of the increase, with no speculation as to if it was a significant amount or not. Wink

I wasn't trying to ignore or downplay the physiological effects or interactions, I'm just saying that if the preliminary findings are overly focused on the physiological interactions without also carefully tracking changes in behaviors then the info gleaned from it will be that much more limited, although this doesn't necessarily lessen the value of whatever information produced. I'm sure it will be studied further anyway considering the billions of dollars at stake here.
