I'm surprised this hasn't already been posted.

Quote:
Gary Gygax, Game Pioneer, Dies at 69
By SETH SCHIESEL
Published: March 5, 2008

Gary Gygax, a pioneer of the imagination who transported a fantasy realm of wizards, goblins and elves onto millions of kitchen tables around the world through the game he helped create, Dungeons & Dragons, died Tuesday at his home in Lake Geneva, Wis. He was 69.

Participants last summer playing Dungeons & Dragons at a game convention in Indianapolis.

His death was confirmed by his wife, Gail Gygax, who said he had been ailing and had recently suffered an abdominal aneurysm, The Associated Press reported.

As co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, the seminal role-playing game introduced in 1974, Mr. Gygax wielded a cultural influence far broader than his relatively narrow fame among hard-core game enthusiasts.

Before Dungeons & Dragons, a fantasy world was something to be merely read about in the works of authors like J. R. R. Tolkien and Robert Howard. But with Dungeons & Dragons, Mr. Gygax and his collaborator, Dave Arneson, created the first fantasy universe that could actually be inhabited. In that sense, Dungeons & Dragons formed a bridge between the noninteractive world of books and films and the exploding interactive video game industry. It also became a commercial phenomenon, selling an estimated $1 billion in books and equipment. More than 20 million people are estimated to have played the game.

I preferred other rpgs but D&D really did start the craze.

Entertainingly enough, I actually convinced my (at the time) very hardcore christian mom that D&D wasn't devil's play and it was a fun thing to do even if it wasn't her cup of tea. I explained it as if we are taking part in writing a book.

I never played. I never wanted to until I was old enough that I had too much other stuff to do. If I had my current friends when I was younger I probably would have.

I like the books, such as the monster manuals, mainly for the artwork.

I "played D&D" in highschool, or at least that's what our parents thought we were doing. it was all just an excuse to go over to our dungeon master's house and drink all night. the dungeon master obviously being a mid 30ish gay college professor because, hell, it's dungeons and dragons.

I have know idea what that means, we never actually got around to playing for more than a half hour or so at a time. the real reason is because, hell, it's me we're talking about.

my friends and i played in middle school, when it first came out. we had lots of fun with our DnD slumber parties. we had a couple of characters that anyone could play during the game - twins who had a knack of jumping into bottomless wells or tripping traps. "Look, Tyrsis, what does this button do?" "I don't know, Tyrian, it's such a pretty button." *press* *ten thousand bearbugs drop from the ceiling*

another time, someone brought a duck into a cavern. yeah, we weren't entirely serious about it. (-:

I started playing D&D in my grandma's basement with my friends and my older brother was our DM. I was like 7 or 8 and it was first edition. Those were the days, heh. Razz

I played with the same gaming group for over 10 years, starting in the late 1970's. We went through the 1st and 2nd edition rules. I used to be take my vacation at DunDraCon in Oakland, CA every year. I've been to GenCon and Origins.

I'm a nerd.

One of my co-workers and I have even had old gaming phrases slip in when we deal with clients that admit to being gamers. An example would be yesterday, a client with a set of fuzzy D20's hanging from an overhead at his desk called in to report a drive crash. The data on the drive could not be backed up and I told him, "I'm sorry, your data missed it's saving throw". Once the drive was replaced and the system rebuilt (including data from a network backup), I called to let him know that "We located a 15th level cleric and had 'raise dead' cast on your notebook. "

Upon reading of The Great EGG's death at the office, my equally nerdy co-worker and I had the "gamer's lunch" of Cheetos and Mountain Dew in his honor.

Bugbears Smile

I've never played D&D, but I've played a couple of other pen and paper RPG's. I appreciate what Gygax did.

I swear to god, as far as I can see? Sinfest is the ONLY PLACE ON THE ENTIRE INTERNET where news of Gary Gygax's death wasn't immediately saturated with responses of "oh I guess he failed his saving throw" or "must be rolling in his grave"

"Abdominal aneurysm" is one of those types of death that have creepy significance to me.
