And by lately I mean... the past... I don't know... year.

I can't remember the last time Sinfest took place in the city, or the coffee shop... or when it discussed anything particularly urbane.

Everything is soooo rustic and fresh... very Romantic.

I don't like it.

Bah, nature is the shiz. How could you not like it?
Maybe they're just out walking around in nature more because it's their spring... Or maybe Tatsuya is low on ideas that can be done in the city right now.
Who knows?

he's right, there have been some chances. I don't if it became less urban stuff, but something is different.

If I'd been drawing a comic strip nearly every day for 8 years, I'd probably want to change things occasionally.

Me neither. I miss coffeehouse, the streets. And i say that the change is not in the pattern of the art, but in the artist. Maybe he smoke too much ganja.

this crowd doesn't hang out at the coffee shop. you're thinking of jerry, elaine, george, and kramer.

try tbs.

coffee shop <> coffee house. the one is more related to a diner, the other to a bar.

no, the sinfest people used to hang out in a really truly coffee house, and do poetry slams and the like.

definitely a change....maybe it's because buddha has become a character. i don't really see him as an urban sort.

then again, sunday's strip took place in the city. Not exactly the main characters in their old haunts, but still.

I loved when it was sexual and resentful, bitter and joyful, hypocritical but with truly idealistic undertones. It was more edgy and bad ass... its nice now, but its more like a meditation rather than a rebel riot.

A peaceful artist is a boring artist.

Actually, yes. Just skim the archives for the 2001-2005 works, and you will realize that even if his art wasn't as good as it is now, his storytelling was much better.

Tatsuya has gone from good characters and character development with funny and good stories and average art to good art with boring themes and totally out of character developments. Do you remember the oldschool monique, the slut? Or the oldschool Slick, the pimp? And now, can you remember any time in the recent storytelling that they have been other than a "cool" and "manipulative in a cute way" girl and a "in love, but rejected" guy? I can't.

It all started going downhill with the whole "unrequited love" storyline, which I assume (probably wrongly) was caused by some changes in the artist's real life, and I remember it basically following his disappearance. Then we had the whole Buddha thing, which was great for a couple of strips, but has now become a tiresome trend. The fact is, Criminy is mostly gone, Squigley is a parody of himself (a remarkable achievement given that he was a parody in the first place), God has become megalomaniac and quite a bit of a twat, the Devil is not a mischievous evil-doer anymore, but a crappy master of "temptation" who is always a failure at it because the main character has become so righteous and honorable it's unbearable, Seymour has gone from a religious fundamentalist parody (to the point of the angels themselves making fun of him) to a character that not only doesn't do anything interesting anymore, but also everyone tolerates and, at most, are confused by is preaching (the "WTF" recent strip is a good example of it - he doesn't do anything other than deciding to preach on a snail, and the snail is just confused by it). Lil' Devil is a McDonald's worker, nuff said. Ezekiel and Ariel are... where are Ezekiel and Ariel? I certainly don't know, and it seems like Tatsuya doesn't, either. The Dragon has been made into a joke, when he (it?) has always been the voice of reason in the past. Pooch has been made even stupider, and Percival has been recreated as stupid as Pooch was in the old strips.

In 2006, Buddha appeared, and the other characters as we know them went away. I am not surprised Tatsuya removed the old "Cast" page in the website, because he is very obviously not going to give any consistency to his characters. It is a valid and conscious decision, I'm sure, but it has also ruined my enjoyment of the strip.

Last note: The old "Cast" webpage had this three descriptions:

Slick: slacker, occasional pimp, negotiating with the Devil to sell his soul, leader of the Resistance

Monique: "jail bait, low fidelity, many tramp-like qualities, but deep down inside she's still a tramp"
Criminy: "Slick's Number One"

The prosecution rests.

k. I sure didn't expect such a long answer to my short "non", but ok. I don't read the comic as long as you, I started after the first appearence of buddha.
I just wanted to say that peace is nice, too.

I hate to be that annoying person that points out that you don't actually pay for this comic strip, and that if you don't like it, you should probably stop reading it, and that. That's what I did with megatokyo and ctrl-alt-del. They became shit, so I stopped reading. It's the magic of the internet. Le Wow!
