I'm assuming the change to jpg is because .gif can only handle up to 255 colours, so he (at last!) decided to listen and switch over to a file format that allows better colouring.

And I'm assuming .jpg (as much as the compression makes the image lose some quality) because it's the smaller file and he doesn't want to kill his bandwidth. The site is slow enough as it is.

About the strip, it at least puts Seymour in character again (maybe Tatsuya reads the forum?) even if I think I've seen the first panel one too many times. But hey, much better than the silly escargot or the emo ones.

And the art is just beautiful. He has mastered the facial expressions, and is becoming good at drawing dynamic bodies (i.e. Monique in the first panel).

Especially since it's a poorer format for this sort of image. There are rules! Well, guidelines at least. JPEG are best for photos, and if Tat's wanting to change, he'd be better advised to go from GIF to PNG - after all, that's what it's for (it's even in the name). Also, I didn't find this strip particularly funny or enlightening.

Does it put him in character? Where is the ridiculing of Seymour? Seymour destroys all Sin, and he wins while doing it. And walks away. Sure, that's what Seymour would want to do, but it's also the last thing I would expect to happen. But yeah, in the end it's better than other comics by far (curse your clever usage of colors that blinds me from the flaws in the comic!).

And I really doubt he reads the forums.

I seem to have double posted, sorry. If a moderator can delete the post it will be appreciated.

I'm sure he reads the forum. Sometimes a new arc or strip seems like an answer to the complaints in the forum, for example, this strip feels kinda old school, doesn't it?

Judging by MOP's date of signup, I'm going to make a massive leap here and assume he's fairly new to the forums. In which case, based on said huge assumption, I will point out that this debate has been raging for years, with some people - after giving ideas or criticism and seeing something similar being incorporated into a subsequent strip - claiming to demonstrate 'proof' that Tat reads and uses the stuff in the forums. I reckon he probably does read through the most recent posts fairly often (after all, he's producing something for an audience, an audience for whom he has created this BBS, so surely he's interested in what that audience thinks? All artists desire feedback and criticism) although I strongly doubt he follows multi-page threads in depth. So the moral of the story is, to influence Tat, have a good opinion with a strong basis and get to the point quickly Wink

Of course he never reads the forums. It's pure coincidence that today's strip is kind of "old school" and in an urban setting just after people were talking of missing those very things. Pure coincidence that Crim had a Thich Nhat Hahn book in his stack o'books just after TWSOD asked about good books on Buddhism.

But that discussion was yesterday.

Well, maybe that's the reason the strip was late? Maybe he put some other idea aside to do this in response to the criticism and it took him until now. I didn't know about the Buddhism book.

Admittedly, that one was pretty subtle. Offhand, I can't think of any strips that have been clear, blatant responses to things on the forum.

I see Tat's apartment! Or at least, there's a cat sticking their head out of the window in the first panel.

Filecore/ood: While it's possible this particular strip uses more than 256 colors, most colored strips tend to have very limited color spaces. GIF was, in fact, created for dealing with this type of image.
Also, for this image, both GIF and JPG end up being about the same size, so I doubt it was a bandwidth consideration. However, a BMP of this same strip would be on the range of ~3 MB. (about 7 times the current size of ~400 KB)

My guess is that either
a) There was some quality gains to be had by using JPG for this particular strip
b) JPG is a bit more common, and thus desirable for that reason?
c) an accident occurred
d) The artist just wants to mess with you.

And yes, a throwback to 'classic' sinfest for the win!

Oops, I didn't mean to write BMP, I meant PNG. Too many similar letters and acronyms, I got my fingers all twisted up. Of course you don't go to BMP. But PNG is like a hyper version of GIF, with all of the same principles and methods but more efficient. And now my comment about "it's in the name" makes sense - PNG stands for Portable Network Graphic. Sorry for the confusing typo.
