I am considering moving to Houston. Here's why: warm climate, relatively close to the beach, lots of art and culture, lots of Hispanics (and I have a Spanish degree). I am enamored with the fact that there is a photography museum.

I want to live somewhere close to downtown if possible, or somewhere else where I can walk to almost anything I'll need in everyday life. I'm 22 and my girlfriend will be living with me. So, basically we want to be in the middle of everything.

I've looked online at to learn what I can about the various neighborhoods. Midtown looked pretty good. Montrose looked cool but kinda shady. Where do you guys recommend?

Houtson!

The children smile in Houtson. A dog walks by and seems to say "You will do a good deed today." The local convenience store's power is on the fritz and the owner is giving away ice cream. He is Albanian and he has two sons.

Houtson!

The sun shines brighter in Houtson. You can purchase sunglasses for cheap at the nearby pharmacist. The cashier is shy and goes to school at night. You put on your sunglasses and eat ice cream, and prepare to do a good deed.

Houtson!

Wait, Houston? Nevermind.

I find it odd that someone who has never posted here before wants our opinion about a place they're thinking about moving to.

In other news, ask Benny. He may answer, tho you'll probably have to bend over for it.

I've followed the Sinfest comic for a few years. I also read through the forum occasionally, so I'm not completely aloof.

Dammit, I wish I'd thought of that.

I ought to see that movie again.

Personally, I can think of few places in the US worse than Houston. I have visited there. I have friends there.

I grew up in Washington DC. I lived in Jakarta, Indonesia. I love the warmth. Houston's climate hangs on you like a warm, wet blanket. It is enervating rather than relaxing. It makes all the buildings into giant, frosted enclosures that keep people inside and drains the city of any hint of vitality.

You will be in the middle of NOTHING. I could not believe how empty of everything downtown Houston was. After 5, it is a ghost town. No one seems to live there. During the day, a few people scurry from one building to the next, but no one was just out and about.

Go over to the Montrose area at night. It rarely sleeps.

I lived down between Kemah and Galveston. I like the area and I don't even mind the heat. I really like being next to the water and the sea food is damn tasty. There are a lot of things to do in Houston though it is a bit more blue collar than places like Dallas (cause they are snooty). The traffic sucks real bad and there isn't any good public transportation. There are some good places to live that aren't very expensive. I don't know about up by Montrose. The North side of Houston is much swankier, I think. I was never up there much. It is a very large city. Anyway, I like the place but you can't walk everywhere and especially not in the downtown area. There isn't everything there.

I've heard it sucks. I've heard it described as a very large four leaf clover with absolutely no luck at all. meaning it is literally shaped like a clover, with four seperate cities and it takes three days driving to get from one to the other and no one actually lives there.

try austin instead.

There are way, way more than four cities. I can think of three distinct categories but they aren't in a clover pattern and the categories are rather arbitrary and/or geographically based. But I hung out on the south side for the most part so what do I know. ::shrugs::

I hear good things about Austin and San Antonio was pretty when I lived there (...over ten years ago).
