well, at least we know people understand what the word "nazi" actually means: the ability to score goals in soccer.

I missed the NBA draft last night, and missed this awesome moment.

The NBA symbolically drafted Isaiah Austin days after he learns he has a genetic disorder that will prevent him from playing professionally.

for those of us starved of not-worldcupball, the CFL season started the other day, and it's fun

that was totally awesome. it was cool enough that Silver invited Austin to the draft in the first place. giving him a moment all his own was over the top awesome.

Brazil vs Chile was a fun game. I'm not super good at being a sports person (I spent several minutes telling the people around me how muscle memory works from a neuronal level), but it was interesting to watch. Soccer is like hockey, it's constantly moving, and I like that. Also, the rules are relatively easy. No touchy with your arms. Don't hit people with your cleats. And then there's off sides, but whatever, I can remember one thing. Anyway, I'm enjoying my first World Cup, even if hockey is still a demonstrably better sport (mostly because there's no out of bounds).

The USA will only win the world cup when it's called "soccer" worldwide.

but if Equestria wins the FIFA world cup, then the official name of the sport will be changed to hoofball

the USA will really only win the World Cup when the Lebron Jameses and Mike Trouts and Robert Griffin IIIs of the United States decide to play soccer professionally instead of basketball and baseball and football

Germany stomped Brazil. 1-7, at this level... it's verrückt!

an even worse part of it is that the germans started conservation play at a certain point, essentially just trying to save energy and avoid potential injuries, because it was super clear they'd won

if they hadn't, the score could have been 7-0, 8-0, ... 10-0? it could have been ridiculous. Brazil was folded.

I wonder if the loss is going to play into the post-WC outrage about the expensive facilities and supporting construction projects that they're stuck with now.

npr was speculating on that last night - they figure the brazilians are mad, but they can't blame the team, because this guy was hurt, and that guy had penalties, and whatever the rest of it was. they were saying it might even impact the next elections, with the president of the country held accountable...which seems utterly ridiculous to me, but then i'm really not that much into sports.

still, all the expense could factor into it - although it still seems to be a bit harsh, blaming the president for the team not winning. it's like voting out the governor because the home team lost the super bowl.

It might sting a bit more if the governor set aside massive amounts of state money to build the stadiums and stadium-towns to host the last 32 games up to and including the Superbowl, especially if the state already had some massive problems with public services, housing, and poverty.

It's not like he affected the outcome of the game at all, but if the team had at least won then maybe voters would be able to overlook some of the ridonk taxpayer cash being used to set up the whole show.

it probably doesn't help that Brazil is also hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics, so basically Brazil has gone on two enormous binges of sports infrastructure construction at once.
