The open access journal Transformative Works and Cultures just published a paper examining the brony thing as an Alternative Reality Game.

Although bronies are the specific topic of the research, a lot of what it goes into would apply equally well to Adventure Time, or just about any other modern online fandom built around specific fictional worlds where the creator content/fan community interaction is more than one-sided. It's a pretty interesting link to peruse if the phenomenon of internet fandoms tickles your fancy.

but does it explain why kids love the cinnamony swirls of cinnamon toast crunch?

No, but it does tell you why kids like Applejack when she doesn't taste like apples.

I actually took a class called "Transmedia Publishing", it's given rise to things like this http://www.internationalmimeacademy.com and the companies that build it. It'll take about 15-20 minutes to experience fully.

Just ran across some pretty great podcast recommendations covering the history of Rome.
The first one is just that, The History of Rome. It ran for about four years and 179 episodes, covering the mythical founding to the fall of the Western Empire.

The next one is a seven-part series in Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast that's appropriately entitled Death Throws of the Republic. Might want to get these now while they're still available for free.

I somehow didn't know this before, but all of James Burke's Connections series are on Youtube. On his official channel. In full. Neatly organized by series.

It's kind of NSFW (robot "porn"), so be warned.

Sad That is depressing to see what has been lost.

Wow, never thought there'd be a time I would have a country go back to.

are you from afghanistan, Yinello?

i knew that afghanistan had had much more equality for women in the past, but it's really frightening what a few religious fanatics can do. i'd like to say "it can't happen here" - but i bet that's what those people thought.

I dunno, mouse. Afghanistan circa the 1960s might be comparable to wherever you live IF you have a recently established and probably corrupt monarchy with a long history of relatively frequent violent coups that is currently trying out a new experimental democracy that would quickly be replaced by a 'republic' hoping to exterminate an extremist political party that developed during the experimental democracy with strong tie-ins to massively violent outside world powers that ultimately kill a million of your citizens and bring the ire of their main opposing world power, and THEN, once your country is completely fucked over by the two of them, have a few draconian religious fanatics gain massive influence *deep breath*

but if that's the case I don't know how one could fail to be open to the possibility that one's country MIGHT not be entirely stable

and Yinello has been pretty obvious about not being from Afghanistan, I think
