A lot of people may have seen this, as it's pretty old but my Anthropology teacher showed it to the class and I thought it was a very interesting viewpoint.

Even though I KNOW the deal behind the Nacirema essay, I totally absolutely still wanted to tear it apart from a standpoint of anthropological professionalism. For instance, you can point out the subjective and incorrect apriorism of common practices as being centrally spiritual, which distorts the true nature of their common practices.
The author's supposition of practical and hygienic acts as being fundamentally religious and ritually ceremonial was particularly egregious and demonstrably incorrect! feh feh feh |

I wasn't alive in the mid 50s, so I'm not sure what the bathroom habits were like at that point in time. You are correct that the essay does leave much to be desired as an anthropological piece. I may not have classified the bathroom habits of this particular study group as a religous observance but the amount of time spent in the bathroom and using the various utensils therein would definately show some sort of devotion to self. Perhaps a form of egomania.
Anyway... It's still funny.
So meh. |

| Quote: | | In addition to the private mouth-rite, the people seek out a holy-mouth-man once or twice a year. These practitioners have an impressive set of paraphernalia, consisting of a variety of augers, awls, probes, and prods. The use of [505 begins ->] these objects in the exorcism of the evils of the mouth involves almost unbelievable ritual torture of the client. The holy-mouth-man opens the client's mouth and, using the above mentioned tools, enlarges any holes which decay may have created in the teeth. Magical materials are put into these holes. If there are no naturally occurring holes in the teeth, large sections of one or more teeth are gouged out so that the supernatural substance can be applied. In the client's view, the purpose of these ministrations [8] is to arrest decay and to draw friends. The extremely sacred and traditional character of the rite is evident in the fact that the natives return to the holy-mouth-men year after year, despite the fact that their teeth continue to decay. |
This reminds me, I haven't been to the dentist in a while. =\
PS: I got it. ^.~ |
