Came across this from a other site.
Interestingly, the new Digital Millenium Copyright Act that Bush is pushing, will allow for sentences up to 10 years for copying a CD. Naturally this has the blessing of the music and film industry.

I think The Inquirer doesn't exactly have a great reputation as being a reliable source of tech news (to the point where some forums will dismiss anything coming from there out of hand).
Other than bashing your source, it would be par for the course. Legislation by parties who know nothing about what they are legislating about and whatnot. |

| Let's play a game. First one to connect the music industry to terrorism in seven steps wins Kevin Bacon. |

| When I was a kid, I was constantly told that copying my tapes and recording the radio was illegal. Funnily enough, no-one ever seemed to be arrested for that either. |

Damn! I can only do it in three. What are the other four steps?
Wait, this means I don't win Kevin Bacon. Yaay! _________________

1. The music industry features several artists, one of which is
2. Jay-Z, who appears on
3. MTV, which is affiliated with
4. the U.N., which totally disagrees with
5. George Bush, who invaded
6. Iraq, which is home to
7. Terrorists.
I'll donate my Kevin Bacon to charity. |

While I admire your faith in the system (ignoring, for a second, the accusation of cluelessness), I have a very difficult time believing that this isn't the direct result of heavy corporate "lobbying". Do you really think that copyright law is a major concern for the women and men in congress right now?

Um, I have almost no faith in the system, I agree that this is nigh certainly the result of heavy corporate lobbying (further, I suspect that nearly any tech related bill that isn't a direct response to either things that offend poeple (video games, music, etc.) or teh terrarists), but I aslo feel that heavy corporate lobbying is par for the course, thus my initial statement. |

Ya. In Poland they want to allow for sentences for HAVEING ANY EQUIPMENT THAT CAN ALLOW YOU TO COPY OR DOWNLODE things whitch have copy rights.
And I think that they'll ban internet next. _________________ Maryśka to jedyna trawa która może skosić ogrodnika. |

The thing about this new Act that gets me wondering is will they actually enforce it?
I mean sure it's relatively easy to get the IPs and address of the people who download, I mean the government can just force peer-to-peer software companies like BitTorrent and Limewire to turn over their list. But do they actually intend on sending possibly waves and waves of downloaders to a local prison. I mean hell, there are more people who use illegal downloads than illegal immigrants. Somehow I doubt the police or even the post office will have the capabilities to enforce this or any deportation bill. It's all limited by manpower. |
