what is interesting to me is that the distribution of 'places in the u.s. where columbus day is a bfd, or even celebrated at all' can be closely mapped to 'places in the u.s. with a large italian-american population' and even more closely mapped to 'places in the u.s. with enough knights of columbus to have a lodge'.

i mean, face it - if irish-americans didn't already have st. patrick's day, we would be celebrating the voyage of brendan the navigator. it's mostly about having an excuse to party. then you get in trouble, because you don't let everyone come to the party.

also, we know the vikings came here because they left runes carved on stones that they then buried like 30 feet down. it must be true, there was a show on the history channel.

even the history channel has no reports showing evidence of australians.

the knights of columbus are basically american catholocism's superconservative advocacy group, the dudes they send out after stuff like Prop 8.
