I will explain what has been going on with columbus in the united states since, oh, 1995
WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON WITH COLUMBUS IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE OH 1995:
Most american teachers: we are going to downgrade him from a heroic figure to a controversial figure, and begin using his holiday as an opportunity to segue into the reminder that the native americans suffered greatly.
Italian-American groups: the hell you say, fuck you
Native Americans: we're going to protest at any event held in his honor
Knights of Columbus: the hell you say, fuck you
Knights of Columbus: we're not racist, BUT |

what is interesting to me is that the distribution of 'places in the u.s. where columbus day is a bfd, or even celebrated at all' can be closely mapped to 'places in the u.s. with a large italian-american population' and even more closely mapped to 'places in the u.s. with enough knights of columbus to have a lodge'.
i mean, face it - if irish-americans didn't already have st. patrick's day, we would be celebrating the voyage of brendan the navigator. it's mostly about having an excuse to party. then you get in trouble, because you don't let everyone come to the party.
also, we know the vikings came here because they left runes carved on stones that they then buried like 30 feet down. it must be true, there was a show on the history channel.
even the history channel has no reports showing evidence of australians. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

Wha-huh?
I just thought the KoC was an anti-Mason Mason group that played dress-up and scared my in Church by walking around with swords and liverspots. _________________ Scire aliquid laus est, pudor est non discere velle

This thread makes me want to cry for so many reasons.
Fun fact from a former history major, Columbus was a GIANT DOUCHE. _________________ The older I get, the more certain I become of one thing. True and abiding cynicism is simply a form of cowardice. |

I went to a catholic private school til 5th grade, he kind of was in my school. There were small mentions of his "other deeds" but mostly a man in blue and red spandex with a C on his chest. _________________ I have a face, with a mustache.
