So this story from late last year is still on-going, but in the meantime new fuel has been added to the fire. Hopefully it results in for-real jail time.

The SocWasAChrist part is not just his hypocrisy, it's also from this quote he gave while trying to explain his accident:
Quote:
I felt a tremendous amount of pressure in my family. You take those personal issues [and] add betrayal on the professional side, and it really gets to be overwhelming.

He was so distraught at how society is destroying his marriage that he got drunk and ran over some kids in his boat. SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO AMERICA, GAY AGENDA???

So the rational position is that government can't regulate what goes into food, including things like contaminated meat or produce that kills people?

The rational and consistent position is that government should not have the power to tell you what you can put into your own body.
Given this situation, people would naturally look for brands and endorsements of quality.
Quite frankly, responsible consumers already do. Heck, there's people in this thread who have indicated they do not buy edible products made in China.

Very true. I've been avoiding trans fats for nearly as long as the government has been pushing for us to eat them. I also avoid cooking with polyunsaturated fats, which the government STILL pushes as a "heart healthy" alternative. Private organizations told us the truth about trans fats from the very beginning. The problem is the monopolistic nature of the FDA has a smothering effect on the private advocacy, regulation, and accreditation market in health so the only people who got the message were those that specifically sought out alternative sources. Abolish the FDA and thousand newer, better FDA's would spring up overnight.

By the way, far from providing a counterexample, the financial credit agency rating situation actually proves our point. CRA's were the model of a highly regulated government created monstrosity. There was no free market in industrial credit rating agencies, and SEC rules actually required money managers to use the ratings of these monopolistic agencies in making purchases. From a free market perspective, the financial services industry is every bit as messed up as food regulation and none of us who advocate the abolition of the FDA would recommend replacing it with such a system. It is a testament to the devotion pro-government thinkers have to their master that the only two systems they can even conceive of either socialism or fascism.

See? If we get rid of Big Gubbermint monopolies like the FDA, private industry can best help us choose the best ingredients and foods to consume!

That might be a more compelling argument if it were true. Not that I expect anyone in the US to be able to discuss the federal government with any shred of rational argumentation.

In a different but related thread, somebody said the EPA was actually standing in the way of the trend private industry had set of cleaning up their act and reining in pollution before the Feds came in and gummed up the works with their onerous regulations.

I made the mistake of reading the comments.

Honestly I'm not surprised they'd say that. With the huge stigma on women enjoying sex + rape victims not being believed I can imagine they'd rather say that God gave them the baby. It makes me mad at society though.

well, there is also the problem that a lot of kids in the US get very poor sex education, and rely on what they are told by other kids about sex. so they don't necessarily understand that they have gone all the way when they in fact have gone all the way - you know, because they didn't take all their clothes off, or something.

Whereupon someone tries to tell me gay people just need to be more tolerant of other's intolerance, because by being someone's opinion it's protected by some kind of force field or something that is impervious to all criticism.

I'm the light blue user, btw.

i always like how those people claim to be standing up for "freedom of speech" when they are actually advocating the muzzling of speech that they don't like.
