I'm trying to keep most of my activity to Twitter, but I'm worried it's only a matter of time before they collapse into massive dickery.

I also gave Google a fake name and regularly make bullshit searches. I sign up for certain free and spammy things as well for my snail mail.

The stupidest thing about it all to me is that even if I kept everythibg straightforward and consistently used real info, Google still wouldn't know wtf to advertise to me. I'm apparently not part of a demographic?

there's no need to go to all that trouble
just use a different search engine

like DuckDuckGo
_

(or Startpage, which runs directly on Google but sterilizes the queries for you, or half a dozen other options)
_
sometimes it's helpful to switch back to Google (hidden behind Startpage) for an obscure search or two because they have indexed the internet more extensively than anyone else, but for the most part Google has lost me as a user

as a user of their search engine, anyway -- since they own YouTube, which remains the big k̶i̶d̶ giant moneygrubbing corporate property on the block, they're still the only ones to host certain content that I keep up with, because the content producers (increasingly begrudgingly) make it so.

I'm also working towards phasing out my GMail accounts, and although I own a Chromebook as my ultra-portable internet machine, I only bought it for the hardware -- cheap, lightweight, good battery, and no moving parts? Yes, please. Thank you, Samsung. Chrome? Nah. GTFO, Google. My Chromebook is not running Chrome nor is it doing anything else in the ever-expanding Google ecosystem.

(inb4 DuckDuckGo is actually owned by Google /conspiracy theories)

I use Duckduckgo, and used to use Scroogle. Unfortunately I haven't found a better alternative for me for email, and of course there is Youtube. Ixquick is really great too. I like it because it has a filterable image search, which I love for finding art references.

I'm looking forward to using Linux instead of an apple device geared towards Google.

I've had a Yahoo email account for a few years now, it seems decent enough. But it's only being used for specific things and not as my primary means of emailery.
Also, I guess you just, like, don't fit Google's labels, man.

Didn't feel like putting it in the Feminism thread because it is satire after all, not actual news.

Watching a TV thriller. Character pulls out phone, dials. My phone rings.

It's my mom. Hi mom!

Here I was thinking that would be some divisive fashion statement, like embracing ol' dixie s a flag. Now, if Abrams signed off on it, that would be different, of course...

These are times in which we must ask the important questions.

So everyone knows mental health is stigmatized. It's especially true in medicine, where doctors and nurses don't like anything they can't diagnose with a lab, imaging, or a physical exam. I'm reading this paper about how medical professionals in mental health are also stigmatized. And I'm stoked, because I have this weird need to be the underdog and then kick everyone's ass. Cool

My paper writing process, which you, too, can use to write papers for college credit (more or less).

1. Wait until the paper is almost due. "Almost" is relative to the length of the paper. Anything less than 10 pages should be left until you have about a week until it's due. Less than 5 pages (that's really more of a long essay, IMNSHO) and you might consider doing it 2-3 days before, schedule permitting.
2. Already know what you're going to say. Read a few papers, form an opinion.
3. Throw a bunch of raw, well-cited data onto a page and move it around until it kind of makes a story.
4. Put words between the data until it reads like you meant it that way all along.
5. If you're a stickler, you might read it over once before turning it in.

Using this method I guarantee you will always end up with a paper that will receive a grade.

4a. realize halfway through that everything you did is wrong forever and bad
4b. panic
4c. completely reinvent paper from the ground up, and write it about an entirely different topic, if applicable

and 6. get all of the A's

s'what i did, anyway

I never had those steps. I do it right the first time. Wink

... and if it's not right the first time, I make it right. I'm from the internet. I argue as a hobby. I don't get wrong answers, I get opportunities to correct people with PhDs.* Wink

* YMMV

Well, I suppose the only things you can really be wrong on are mathematics (or anything else with a functioning logical framework) as well as things where you need to produce a functioning product (essays tend not to do anything, so you're mostly safe on that one). If it contradicts itself, or outright doesn't work, you can't defend it.

everything else is on a sliding scale of wrongness -- history is mostly made-up, we're updating our knowledge in the sciences all the time, etc
