I'd love to take you up on that offer, Ennis, but right now that's just not in my budget. Sad One day, though!

Not gonna lie, when I read the first couple words of your post I was like "No, Ennis was a spambot all along!". My fears have been allayed, for now.

Yes, I have read the entire comic, made over 400 posts including some that show photos of me and visited the forum daily (and sometimes multiple times), just to promote one link.

They could be anyone. They could be you. They could even be me.

Now, I'm giving you a choice: either put on these glasses or start eatin' that trash can.

Just got called out to identify a snake mom saw in one of her bushes while raking leaves.

It's just a harmless little juvenile rat snake. Too bad they don't stay that pretty. This one was just lollygagging around, not feeling too put upon as the pictures were taken.
They're easy to confuse with black racers, which we also have around here. Ratsnakes aren't as mean as racers, though.
Either way, once she heard that they tend to eat rodents mom was all for letting it stick around.

There's an organization called Health Care for the Homeless Clinicians' Network. Which I always read as the Health Care for [the Homeless Clinicians] Network, despite the clear plural possessive.

About a month and a half after I finally set up the Ubuntu One client on my Windows box and Ubuntu laptop, Canonical announces they're shutting the service down.

Quote:
As of today, it will no longer be possible to purchase storage or music from the Ubuntu One store. The Ubuntu One file services will not be included in the upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 LTS release, and the Ubuntu One apps in older versions of Ubuntu and in the Ubuntu, Google, and Apple stores will be updated appropriately. The current services will be unavailable from 1 June 2014; user content will remain available for download until 31 July, at which time it will be deleted.

I deleted my ~/.mozilla directory a day or so ago, which means that at the moment I don't have adblock or noscript or any of that good stuff installed.

I just now loaded deviantArt, and normally I'd expect banner ads etc in addition to video ads that lag everything to hell if you open too much art in too many tabs, but no. It immediately redirected me to some sort of mmo thing. I didn't even click on any sort of advertisement, it just sent me there.

I'd think maybe it was malware of some kind, but it hasn't done it anywhere else, and generally my security is very good. But I dunno, it's possible that the person who controls my router installed something, or something. I'm too lazy to investigate tonight. I am not, however, too lazy to nuke my entire os installation just in case it actually is something on my end. I maintain all of my configuration and such in a script that does everything for me, and all of my files are all on three different drives, so starting everything fresh takes almost no work. Even if, nay, especially if this happened on my one Windows installation (which is on different device and rarely used) I'd be lazily reinstalling from the everything-trustworthy-installed backup of that that I have.

but I don't think it's on my end
It's almostly certainly against dA's advertising policy, but still, there it is.
the entire idea is new to me
when did they start using that sort of automatic redirect advert
it's
like
the worst thing
it's worse than popups
it's worse than popunders
it's even worse than that one kind of thing that plays a video that keeps saying it's going to tell you some kind of great secret but just keeps name-dropping something scammy

why

On a related note:

Internet companies' growing ambitions spook 51 percent of Americans: Reuters/Ipsos poll
BY ALEXEI ORESKOVIC SAN FRANCISCO Fri Apr 4, 2014 5:16pm EDT

Quote:
(Reuters) - The personal data gathering abilities of Google, Facebook and other tech companies has sparked growing unease among Americans, with a majority worried that Internet companies are encroaching too much upon their lives, a new poll showed.

Google and Facebook generally topped lists of Americans' concerns about the ability to track physical locations and monitor spending habits and personal communications, according to a poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos from March 11 to March 26.

The survey highlights a growing ambivalence towards Internet companies whose popular online services, such as social networking, e-commerce and search, have blossomed into some of the world's largest businesses.

Now, as the boundaries between Web products and real world services begin to blur, many of the top Internet companies are racing to put their stamp on everything from home appliances to drones and automobiles.

With billions of dollars in cash, high stock prices, and an appetite for more user data, Google, Facebook, Amazon and others are acquiring a diverse set of companies and launching ambitious technology projects.

But their grand ambitions are inciting concern, according to the poll of nearly 5,000 Americans. Of 4,781 respondents, 51 percent replied "yes" when asked if those three companies, plus Apple, Microsoft and Twitter, were pushing too far and expanding into too many areas of people's lives.

. . .

Google, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook had no immediate comment. Amazon and Twitter did not respond to requests for comment.

But all have said protecting customers' privacy is a top priority, or published strict policies restricting the use of personal data if needed. For instance, storing select data can make online searches and services more reliable.
