I was doing a job at an elderly customer's home yesterday afternoon, tracking down some mis-connected phone wiring. 90 years old and still going strong, formerly Military Intelligence, she was in better shape and more mobile than most of my customers who are only 70-80, and not a trace of senility the whole time I was there.

She brought up the Vegas shooting. It was a natural thing to do. She told me things were going to get worse before they got better, and went into a spiel about how when she was visiting London in the 1950s there was a mosque on every corner. I pointed out that the shooter was a white guy with no religious or political background (which had been pretty well determined by that point in the day). Didn't even phase her. She kept going on about Muslims. And she threw in some occasional remarks about "black neighborhoods," and did I think black men were stronger than white men? Because she seemed to think so!

I try to take pride in two qualities while doing work for a customer: professionalism and affability. I did not push hard in trying to argue against her bigotries. I was mostly quiet, tried to draw her attention back to the work I was doing to distract her, and simply said "nope" when she asked me questions basically to confirm whether or not I thought black people were scary or if I was worried about Muslims taking over the world.

Apparently I was quite successful at being professional and affable because at the end of the job she was singing praises about how hard I worked and how nice it was to talk with me. Somehow, though, I wasn't proud about it.

I think you should be, because there are things you can change, and things you can't. Time will take care of the rest.

especially the 90 yr olds.

but i know what you mean, wheels. it's doubly frustrating when you are talking to someone who seems basically rational, and yet displays a bias you know you can't shake. it's like you've let her down, somehow, by allowing this bit to be a blight on the rest of her intellect.

i think you should take pride in your professionalism, and in the fact that, while you may not have converted her, you didn't do that empty agreeing thing people so often do. maybe you gave her an additional data point to consider.

This is the sound of a Beluga whale imitating humans.

The noise of our clap echoes through the ages, as it always has.
