One symbolic, "culture war" issue which has flown well below the radar this year was an effort in Iowa to call a constitutional convention. Iowa's Supreme Court ruled last year that anything but full marriage equality to gays and lesbians was unconstitutional. The aim of a constitutional convention was to change that.
Anyway, the measure is being soundly defeated as of right now. Small victories and whatnot.

More the latter of the two choices. If America were a democracy, there'd be a hell of a lot more voting taking place throughout it's history. As it is, America was founded as a republic.
