The term you're looking for is power creep.

Power creep in Yugioh?

*looks at Dragon Rulers and Spellbooks dominating the meta*

Nope, no power creep here.

Haven't the foggiest clue if that's sarcastic or not (I know nothing about non-magic non-WoW card games).

Most of this statement is very untrue. There are a lot of Legacy staples(and vitage but that's hardly a real format) that are from the first sets, especially the first 4, Alpha-Revised. The only format you can play Black Lotus in is Vintage, as a one of, and its still thousands of dollars. They make powerful cards today, like Deathrite Shaman and Abrupt Decay, but they dont make cards as overtly powerful as they used to before they really knew what they were doing.

If you were talking to me, then yeah that was entirely sarcastic. Dragon Rulers and Spellbooks are recently released and have basically made other strategies irrelevant. Like, there are strategies that can succeed? But they are few and far between and rely on their relatively favorable matchup vs Dragon Ruler / Spellbook (which should just show yet again how much of a stranglehold that those two have on the game right now).

The simplicity and power of cards like wrath of god and Armageddon is unsurpassed.
They had no flavor text, just a simple sentence.
Oh man, I miss that.

When you have mana acceleration on t1 the equivilent of dual land, mox mox black lotus, you can talk about power creep.

Most of the people whining about power creep in MTG are johnny come latelys as far as im concerned.
