I hope it's the low point, and usually there are a few eps that aren't very good.

Totally recasting this as a bad fic written by Rainbow Dash, and I've heard some other neat ideas for how it could have been fixed.

that's precisely how I've been thinking of it

well, more of a roleplay collaboration type thing between Rainbow and Twilight

sadly, even if you change the framing like that, the episode is still bad as an episode

If it makes you feel any better, Twilight's mom wrote the Daring Do books in the IDW comics. It was a background thing (award placards), and then her occupation as a writer of adventure stories was picked up in the blind bag pack-in cards and the terrible Gameloft game.

So now, if you choose to go down this road, you can divide the canons up like the Star Wars fandom. You can pick, and you can choose, and from these continuity snarls and lack of communication between creative teams you can assemble something that suits your tastes.
But be wary. When one has taken for themselves the freedom to decide which reality to accept and which to decline, it can lead to madness.

I don't really reject any of them
you just have to accept that it's not all going to make sense when you put it all together

I read a lot of fanfiction, and follow a lot of conflicting fanons

I just isolate the stuff that I don't like to whatever horsework that it appeared in (in this case, s04e04, a single episode), and don't let it spread to infect anything else outside of that work unless it's brought up again. I do the same thing with the stuff that I do like, except I isolate it to a particular continuity or maybe a particular author.

So I suppose that's the same as rejecting everything!

The stuff about fixing the episode isn't about working with what was actually written and retconning it. It was stuff like the writer actually being an actual archaolgist who does mundane archaeology things, which would be boring to Rainbow Dash but exciting to Twilight.

I personally think there are situations where totally ignoring canon is not only okay but just really sensible. Sometimes because the writer(s) slip, sometimes because you got suckered into reading Anne Rice. It is possible to choose sensibly what to ignore without throwing all of it out - or alternatively throwing everything but the basic framework or a cool gimmick away.

Mostly I'm disappointed because today was kind of blah, so I wanted a pickmeup, and this clearly didn't provide that. So instead I looked at baby animal videos. Baby rhinos...wtf?

Not saying it's something you shouldn't do, just that it seems like a little more effort than I'm willing to put into it. I don't really have episodes of MLP that I dislike and I don't keep track of who wrote which episodes so that I can keep a list of 'bad' writers in my mind like some fans. A lot of people say things like "Spike episodes are generally lame" or "Dave Polsky episode? Ugh, I hope it doesn't suck!" It's something I enjoy as they come. Never regretted seeing an episode.
That's not to say I don't have some critiques going way back or episodes I don't feel like rewatching very often, just that none of it has risen to the level of "man, that was a bad episode!" for me. It's all good, and the ones that actually do stand out above the rest in my opinion are just icing on the cake. Rectonning, rationalizing, headcanoning, or Wild Mass Guessing or anything about the episodes is not something I tend to do to any great extent. It just is what it is, and I'm satisfied to leave it at that (for now, at least).
I don't really keep track of which ones I like the least, but it's safe to say that the "worst" of MLP will always be better than the best of Uncle Grandpa.

Anyhooves, a certain fan-made MMO is having another open server weekend in January, the rules for the official CCG have hit the Googlenets, and the My Real Ponies series has hit its finale:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

And if you enjoy things like AMV Hell, Ponies: The Anthology 3 is finally done! This one clocks in at over an hour with original animations, video edits, and Source Film Maker segments full of randomness.

This is also the first day of the EQD Hearth's Warming art event with mini-comic 4 pack giveaways. Today's theme is a napping pony, or whatever else you want. Pixelkitties supplied a suitably wacky piece of lineart to color if you don't feel up to the task of drawing something.

the Prophecy is going to be fulfilled
and after all these years
when we had all but given up hope
most had even forgotten

and now...

Well actually there's been a mixup. No Weird Al in S4E11.
Instead, he is in some other episode of which we don't yet know the specifics.

Even her cutie mark turned into little bats.
I think that overshadowed today's song.
