since it's likely to be quite variable group, i figure we should start keeping track.
trump now says he's out - on account of his great love for business.
i don't know whether to be happy or sad. he sure was great for the late-night comics. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

Huntsman could actually be a good candidate -- which is why he won't win the nomination this go-around. He's running now so that he'll have name recognition in 2016. _________________ Scire aliquid laus est, pudor est non discere velle

Newt's hopelessly dishonest (read: politically experienced and savvy) enough to have a decent shot at the office. Well, decenter than everybody left standing.
Sarah Palin is unelectable.
Santorum is too blatant in his religious extremism.
Ron Paul will not make it because GOLD STANDARD!
Romney is too blatant in his un-extremism and pragmatism.
Don't know enough about the others. |

which is part of why one wonders if they have a chance - they are pretty much bland white guys who are/were governors of states in the middle of the country that probably at least half of the electorate couldn't find on a map.
supposed to be fiscally conservative, practical guys who have good executive experience. the problem most of the candidates seem to have is, once the tea party hears about them, the candidate has to totally ditch whatever intelligent thoughts they might have had and start parroting the same fringe agenda.
so right now, i'm guessing that whoever best mimics the lunatic fringe (and i would put money on newt - after all, he was a regular on fox) will get the republican nomination - and then make mccain/palin look like a successful combo, come november. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

Comprehensive poll studies don't give a single one of these candidates more than a remote future-postulated-potential chance of beating Obama, which is a bizarrely dismal situation for a party to be in; also one without contemporary precedent. To compare, it's a worse start than McGovern vs Muskie vs Hart.
The biggest question about the republican primaries — and I'm serious here — is how silly they will be. The popular perspective of the GOP primary battles could be that it's an embarrassingly comical event. Palin will probably but not certainly be 'convinced' to drop out to avoid as much of this as possible. |

| they're going to be doing all they can trying to play this as a straight-laced serious event, and the democrats will be doing everything they can to paint it as an utterly ridiculous event. The more you see of Palin, Paul, Tancredo, Gingrich, and Santorum, the more this narrative will go in favor of the dems. |

I, for one, look forward to the "big tent" party becoming a giant televised circus.
I also can't wait for Gingrich to talk to some anti-gay folks about the sanctity of marriage. It'll be great fun. _________________ The older I get, the more certain I become of one thing. True and abiding cynicism is simply a form of cowardice. |

Hey, you left out Gary Johnson.
It's possible some black swan will deprive Obama of a second term, but I'm betting that a rising economy will make him unassailable in late 2012, no matter who the Republicans field. _________________ The reward for a good life is a good life. |
