DO you live in a different country or something? Take for instance the phrase "there should be a law against that". What it seems to be saying is "that act is wrong", what it really is calling for is an increase of government. Anytime people want something regulated, like say a natural resource, that requires new legislation and enforcement, again more government. Many, many people in this country (and probably elsewhere as well) want what they want and don't concern themselves too much with how they get it. At the very least, all the idiots that support the GOP agenda and think we can maintain our lifestyles and livelihoods while cutting taxes are proof of this.

Like I said

Quote:
People regularly want things that could only be readily accomplished with more government involvement i.e. bigger government. Just because they're ignorant of what it takes to achieve what they want doesn't change the reality of it.

Just because people aren't calling for bigger government directly doesn't change the fact that for them to get what they want would require bigger government.

Right, but that's not how I took the original statement. It was that "if some government is good, more must be better". My whole point is this: many people are calling for more government whether or not they realize that's what they are calling for.

Which is not what "if some government is good, more must be better" means. Calling for more government for any other reason is not the same thing. "There ought to be a law!" isn't predicated on some laws being good, therefore more laws are better.

exactly. people want 'more government' in the sense that the want the government to do something.

they want 'more soda' because, hey, a supersize soda is only 10 cents more than the extra large. and it's way more soda!

A scientist takes Romney to task on policy issues related to energy production. It's pretty severe and succinct.

because of this:
Quote:
And if Romney loses, Ryan starts the 2016 campaign for his party’s nomination near the front of the line.
i guess i should put this here: interview with ryan's mentor at miami university. a sample quote, for our european friends:

Quote:
Hart sees the election not as a difference of approaches but a clash of philosophies. “Do we want to become a sort of European socialist welfare state?” he asked when we chatted in his office, decorated with Elvis and Nascar memorabilia, with Paul Krugman’s economics textbook demoted to a doorstop. “Or do we want to be a free-market capitalist economy where people who are productive get rewarded for working hard and creating wealth? What happens with these European welfare states is, everybody’s equally poor. I much prefer a little income inequality.”

take heart, european friends! next year (or in four more, at the worst), we will set you the example of a free market capitalist economy, and you can stop being all poor!

I love the thought that the people who are being rewarded are the people who are working hard.

I have never seen this to be true, but hey! Everyone needs a dream!

About damn time. If this socialist system hadn't tricked me into going to a nearly free university, I could have been working and becoming rich !

ah, but it's working hard and creating wealth. all those fools who work hard at things other than creating wealth (you know, like doctors and teachers and anyone in a service industry and obviously anyone in any sort of bureaucratic system) is not creating wealth. heck, even those people in manufacturing jobs, out there on the assembly lines or something, they aren't _creating_ wealth - they are just allowing the _real_ creators to actualize the wealth they are creating. get rid of them, and what real change have you made in the system? look, just read atlas shrugged - i'm sure that explains it all.
