Which Disney Princess matches what stereotype?
Do you think Snow White is totally goth? Is Little Mermaid indie? What about Mulan? Tinker Bell?
This is a very serious discussion* between a friend of mine, and I'm asking for your help. We want to know how to incorporate the princesses of color without being totally racist about it, as well as find out if other people come up with the same assumptions that we did.
Because I'm bored I'll add what we've come up with so far.
Snow White: Goth
Tinkerbell: Punk
Sleeping Beauty: Preppy
Belle: Book Nerd
Little Mermaid: Indie (she totally thought forks were cool before it was a thing)
Cinderella: Emo (terrible childhood gives her stuff to whine about)
*this is what we talk about when bored at work. |

I read Fables therefore:
Snow White: bitch of the most awesome degree and will tear you apart. Business dress.
Cinderella: kick ass spy
Sleeping Beauty: rich and easy going
Belle: wife and mother who doesn't always know what is going on
The other princesses aren't in Fables so much.
BUT Tinkerbell is in another comic I read and she is a soul sucker.

Actually all the Zenescope fairy tale characters are pretty evil...
The Alice retelling is my favorite though. You see this:
But really get stuff more like this:
and this
Do I read messed up comics? Oh yes. _________________ Before God created Las he pondered on all the aspects a woman might have, he considered which ones would look good super-inflated and which ones to leave alone.

| Looks like Nei Ruffino's coloring over Eric Basaldua's lines. |

Funny, some of those colors are Nei Ruffino's.
The art isn't good by any stretch but the gore and the T&A!!!! _________________ Before God created Las he pondered on all the aspects a woman might have, he considered which ones would look good super-inflated and which ones to leave alone.

| I've seen worse art. I couldn't really dig J. Scott Campbell's lines when she was coloring those. I actually prefer Nei's own linework (especially when it comes to the ladies; she makes them curvy instead of angular and corset-stomached). |

Ever so slightly back on track -
I don't really see the _Disney_ princesses as any particular stereotype. I get my princess/character personalities from more than just the Disney incarnations. If we are sticking _strictly_ to the Disney interpretation:
Snow White - homemaker
Cinderella - PTA member that cries when ketchup is declared a veggie.
Ariel - Probably Hipster
Sleeping Beauty - lawyer
Belle - Book Nerd
Tinkerbell - Goth I guess. _________________ Before God created Las he pondered on all the aspects a woman might have, he considered which ones would look good super-inflated and which ones to leave alone.

| I totally see the Little Mermaid as a hipster. That actually explains a lot of things. |

Well, we were pulling strictly from Disney on the assumption that it's funnier to draw Sleeping Beauty looking snotty in a crappy cheerleader outfit than Alice getting... what is that, stabbed by the hatter? The badass re-writes of fairy tales in general can be fun, but I guess I'm not as big a fan of gore or t&a. Particularly when combined. Sorry, I guess it kind of creeps me out.
We came up with a few REALLY politically incorrect stereotypes for some of the other princesses, and it occurred to me midway through that its actually pretty hard to avoid racism when dealing with stereotypes in general. |

Congratulations! You are more normal than me!! Those fairytales are soooo twisted.
However, Fables is way cool and has the reimagining without the T&A and gore (it is just awesome) so check it out.
But yeah... racial stereotypes are hard to avoid especially when drawing since image is tied so closely to... well, drawing. _________________ Before God created Las he pondered on all the aspects a woman might have, he considered which ones would look good super-inflated and which ones to leave alone.

I'll look into Fables then, thanks for the recommendation!
Also, our extremely racist stereotypes were more like bad 80's high school flicks or Super Friends. Racist but at least not evil. Jasmine got dubbed Audio/Video Nerd and Mulan got J-Pop. There was an extended discussion about how Mulan is actually Chinese and that they do mention that like a million times in the movie and people probably would notice. Then I became informed that C-Pop actually exists, but the wiki article has a picture of a middle aged man that looks like it was taken in the 40's and doesn't give me a whole lot to work as far as easily recognizable designs.
We have no idea what to do with Tiana. Though whatever we pick probably wouldn't be much more controversial than that movie all by itself.

Explaining this made one of my bosses face palm. It was highly amusing and makes me wonder how I still have a job. |

Funny, I was thinking Cinderella as goth and Snow White as Emo... something about her voice always came off as whiny, to me. And Cinderella's so ... mopey.
Is Pocahontas a hippie? |

Pocahontas is totally a hippy.
Jasmine - crazy cat lady?
I agree with the others. _________________ Eureka00: "Reminding you of your addictions" since 1982.
