Irwin fans 'in revenge attacks'
Dead stingrays with their tails cut off have been found in Australia, sparking concern that fans of naturalist Steve Irwin may be avenging his death.
Mr Irwin, a TV personality known as the "Crocodile Hunter", was killed while diving in Queensland when a stingray's barb stabbed him in the chest.
Since then, 10 stingrays have been found mutilated on Queensland beaches.
Government officials said they were investigating the deaths and there could be prosecutions.
Two stingrays were found at a beach north of Brisbane with their tails cut off, while eight were found on another beach on Monday, The Australian reported.
Wayne Sumpton of the state fisheries department said it was not clear if the incidents were connected to Mr Irwin's death.
He said fishermen who inadvertently caught stingrays sometimes cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but such a practise was uncommon.
Michael Hornby, a friend of the late naturalist and executive director of Mr Irwin's Wildlife Warrior fund, condemned any revenge killings.
"We just want to make it very clear that we will not accept and not stand for anyone who's taken a form of retribution. That's the last thing Steve would want," he said.
"I hope everyone understands we have to protect wildlife now more than ever. This is what Steve was all about."
Stingrays are normally placid, but when they feel under threat, a sharp, poisonous spine in their tail flicks up.
A public memorial service for Mr Irwin will be held next week. |

Yes, YES! Feel the apathy flowing through you. People are shallow, and easily controlled through cheap dramatic displays.
Anyway, the guy stupidly pulled the barb out after he'd been stabbed. He might be alive today if he hadn't been so eager to show those nearby it was no big deal. The barb was keeping the wound from exploding open. Sympathy is wasted here, especially since he made his career from pissing off deadly animals.
[Edited in the interests of an economic witty retort towards my would-be detractor: If I was troll, that would imply that I was attempting to make someone respond to me regardless of what that response was. A forum troll, by definition*, is purely after attention. Let us examine the evidence. My post contained material which was on topic, and I did not directly insult or bait the author of another post in a malign way. While it's true that I made a somewhat tasteless jest regarding the foolishness of people as a whole... it was not mean-spirited. I submit that I am not a Troll. I am just not funny, or rather, I wasn't in this particular instance.]

That is so stupid!
So fans of the conservationist Steve Irwin, whose aim was to encourage the appreciation of wildlife and all that, are attacking animals.
Ah, the world is full of such intelligence.... |

Why, that insensitive and ignorant comment sounds strangely familiar! It's almost as if it's been made way too many times already! _________________ TORTOISE RUGBY. |

Yeah, it's no suprise because Irwin's show and he himself were HUGE. With a fan base as massive as his and the core demograpic being what it is, that coveted 18-35 male, you're almost guaranteed to have some kinda of reaction of this sort. It's not insensitive nor ignorant, it's a reaction that I expected to hear about from almost the moment I heard about Irwin's death. _________________

| Indeed. It was all caught on film I believe: http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/09/05/irwin.death/index.html He was stabbed through the heart-- and then he yanked the barb out like a damn fool. If he'd just left the flappin' thing in and been rushed to a hospital, he *might* have lived. |

Dude. He was stabbed through the heart.
You're crazy if you think he ever had a chance regardless of pulling the barb out or not. _________________ -Agamemnon.....but you can call me Jake.

| I get told that so often. It must be true. I stand by my claim that he had a slim chance for survival though. |

Did you consider that the barb was still attached to a live animal?
Did you consider that there is poison in a stingray's barb?
Do you know anything about the heart's value to the body and what introducing a foreign object into that organ does to its functionability?
Do you realize that I'm giving this too much attention and that my love of arguing may really be a sickness I should have looked at?
Did I just make a word up called "functionability"? _________________ -Agamemnon.....but you can call me Jake.
