well, they're kind of designed to (it's a defensive weapon, you don't want to be dragging your potential attacker around with you).

And would not the toxin, whatever it is, be introduced directly to the heart? (That cannot be good)

well, what toxins were going to be injected were already there.

Getting stabbed in the heart is very, very bad. If Irwin was in the emergency room of a hospital when stabbed through the heart with a stingray barb, I doubt that they'd be able to get to him fast enough to save him.

I keep emphasizing the "stabbed through the heart" part because much of the information may be applicable unless you are stabbed through the heart.

well, but where, exactly, in the heart was he stabbed? dead center, piercing multiple chambers? or was it perhaps just in the pericardium, or maybe nicking a vessel? we seem to be assuming that the ray plugged him with the accuracy of annie oakley shooting pips on cards, but that might not have been the case.

Um...you know, it doesn't really matter. Do you know how fact a puncture to any small part of the heart will bleed? My dad had an artery "nicked" while on manuvers in Gitmo before I was born. He describes a stream of blood squirting out of his arm at the elbow in excess of one foot. And that's just a really small artery way away from the heart.

I'm sorry, but any sharp stab to the heart is going to be lethal very quickly (probably less than a minute.) I do not recall any instance of anybody surviving a stabbing wound to the heart. All I really have to go on is the description I read which said, "through the heart" when referring to how Irwin was stabbed. That sounds devistating.

Picking on Irwin for pulling the barb from his chest is pretty heartless.

Oh, God. Did I really leave that last sentence be?

Finally found a reference to someone who SURVIVED a nail into the heart.

http://xo.typepad.com/blog/2003/10/a_very_lucky_wo.html

I can't find the original story but I'm sure someone can

Quote:
Woman survives nail gun in heart scare

A Texas woman has survived shooting herself in the heart with a nail gun.

Joy Wiggins was using the power tool to secure a board at an awkward angle in her home in Kountze.

It was pointing back towards her chest, and when she tried to strike the board, she missed it and shot herself.

When she realised what happened, she climbed down from the attic where she'd been working and called her husband before fainting.

He got her to a nearby hospital where her heart stopped beating and she went into full cardiac arrest. Surgeons worked quickly to keep her alive with a rare procedure to relieve pressure caused by a blood clot.

Just four hours after the lifesaving surgery, Wiggins was awake and alert, says ABC News.

She said: "I knew I hurt myself but I had no knowledge that I had hurt myself quite so bad. I love the fact that I do have life and that I am so blessed."

Surgeon Dr Dar Kavouspour said Wiggins is truly lucky to be alive and without brain damage. "These are cases that I might see maybe three to four times a year, whether it's a stab wound from a knife or a nail gun. The majority of the patients, by the time they arrive to the emergency room, they're already dead."

My vote is with shock on this one though. Every time I have hurt myself whereby I have needed stiches I have never felt pain at first. Later shit loads of pain but when it first occurs you look at the wound going this is going to hurt.

I mean even the woman who shot herself with a nail gun....

I have come to regret posting the story in the first place, I expected more potshots at the nutso steve irwin fans, not a rehash of the first thread. Rolling Eyes

I don't think this was the result of nutso Irwin fans. More likely it's the result of nutsos that are just using the Irwin incident as justification to act crazy.
