You missed my point, you learn only if you're prepared to have your opinion changed.
People most of the time go into a discussion* without this attitude. In fact often they (or rather we) enter a discussion with sole intent of changing other persons opinion. I say any discussion where you go with this intent is a pointless one.
On the other hand when you go to a class, lecture, read a book...you're usually go with the desire to change your opinion, and hence you learn.
So before you start any discussion ask the participants(including yourself) a question?
Are you willing to have your opinion changed?
Anyone answering 'no', should not take part in the discussion.
The true purpose of a discussion should be to approach the truth even if it means you're wrong, not to make other people think like you.
*Especially internet discussion.
disclaimer: I am not saying, Willem, you do this. The post and reply was just inspired by recent discussions involved here. I am not singling you out as an example of anything, I am just expending the discussion.
wheeeeew.

Oh yeah, totally. You're right. But I think that sometimes, even if you don't go into a conversation to have your opinion changed or challenged, the evidence and arguments against your stance may be so overwhelming that sticking to it would be insane. People do do that, but I don't think all of them will. I've admitted I was wrong before and I'm sure I'll do it again in the future.
But of course, it's the internet so most of the time it'll go as you said it'll go. _________________ attitude of a street punk, only cutting selected words out of context to get onself excuse to let one's dirty mouth loose |

This is untrue.
You constantly learn no matter what your opinion or attitude is. You can't help it. |

Been there, done that.
People are always willing to listen if you understand and respect their beliefs.
Only then can you convince them of anything. |

well, there are all different levels of learning. you can learn facts, and you can learn theories. it is almost impossible to avoid learning certain facts, no matter what you think about the theories explaining them (e.g., you will learn gravity works, no matter what you think of newtonian physics)
i think people can be persuaded to revise their thinking on theories. unfortunately, the ones who can't tend to be the loudest. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

Prejudice is a stubborn refusal to accept certain information so as to hold onto an idea you refuse to reject. Can you overcome prejudice? Sure. But until you do, a prejudiced person is still refusing to learn, and will seek out new information that conforms to their prejudice.
Otherwise, I'm totally with mouse. You can hate Mexicans and refuse to accept anything that disagrees with your perception of them but still learn the capitol of New Jersey (semantic) or how to drive a tractor (procedural). Most people don't have opinions on the capitol of New Jersey or how to drive a tractor, though, so I assume Martian meant a more explicit type of learning. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth.
