Okay, so this doesn't seem to be getting play anywhere I've been looking but the Daily Show and every leftie blog in existance, so for those who don't watch either, see below. This happened yesterday.
| Raising Kaine wrote: | Washington, DC – U.S. Senator George Allen today stole a Department of Defense appropriations amendment written, printed and prepared by Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill), and then announced the amendment as his own, moments before Durbin was prepared to introduce the amendment on the Senate floor.
--At 2:30 PM this afternoon the U.S. Senate began debate of the Department of Defense appropriations for FY 2007.
--Already on the docket was Senator Dick Durbin, who was scheduled to introduce an amendment to the bill providing $19 million in additional funding for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center program, which provides treatment care and research for veterans suffering from traumatic brain injuries. That meant that Durbin’s amendment had already been written, printed and prepared for introduction by Durbin.
--Yet, before Durbin could take the floor to introduce his amendment, George Allen entered the Senate Chamber and asked for permission to speak before Durbin. When permission was granted ahead of Durbin, lo and behold, Allen introduced an amendment to the DOD appropriations bill that, how could this be, was identical in language to Durbin’s bill with the exception of one word – the word “will” was changed in Allen’s amendment and replaced with the word “shall.” Other than that, the amendments were identical – Durbin’s amendment had been printed and set to be formally introduced, Allen’s bill had not been written or been placed on the docket to be introduced.
When asked by Senators Stevens and Durbin if his amendment was the same as Senator Durbin’s, George Allen agreed the bills were identical.

Video of Allen
DailyKos even has PDF scans of the two documents.
You may remember Sen. Allen as the man who referred to a non-white employee of his opponent's campaign that was video taping him as "macaca" and then welcomed him to America. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth. | About George Allen wrote: | Senator George Allen is working tirelessly in the U.S. Senate to make Virginia and America a better place to live, learn, work and raise a family. A self-described “common sense Jeffersonian Conservative”, Senator Allen trusts free people and free enterprise.
Senator Allen has set clear priorities during his first term in the United States Senate:
-Strengthening and supporting America's national defense and homeland security.
-Increasing the competitiveness of Virginia and the U.S. for investment and quality, good-paying jobs.
-Advocating and embracing policies to make America a leader in the advancement of technology.
-Reducing the tax burden on families and small business owners.
-Plagiarism and compromising Department of Defense security by document theft. |
Okay, so that last one was mine. |

He was Olbermann's silver prize for World's Worst. The winner is worth noting, too. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth. I’ll do anything to protect them from hurt, the human race is what I serve." - Baba Brinkman |

Wait just a god damn minute.
...
One sec, one sec, it'll come to me, I can rationalize this. I can do it. Come on, come on, what would Bill O'Reilly say?
"George Allen, in a selfless act of plagarism, rescued a piece of legislation from those communist, cut-and-run, tax-and-spend, Democrats, knowing full well that Rep. Dick Durbin (such a porn alias) was about to introduce a further rider calling for harvesting of stem cells from fetuses in order to create a master race of nazi communists."

this link also has a link to "george allen gets confused"....he looks a bit stunned to realize that the rest of the senate realized he was proposing the exact same thing like, almost instantly.
one wonders who he thought he was going to fool. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

The Washington Times weights in:
http://washingtontimes.com/op-ed/20060907-082834-5145r.htm
| Quote: | The bipartisan Allen amendment had a burgeoning list of cosponsors, including Sens. Dick Durbin, Ted Stevens and a host of Democrats, such as Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Barack Obama.
Of course, no issue is above political mudslinging, so Mr. Allen's challenger, James Webb, couldn't resist slinging his share over a manufactured "Whose idea was it?" controversy. Mr. Webb's campaign sent e-mails Tuesday and Wednesday claiming that Mr. Allen "stole" the idea from Mr. Durbin.
Note to Mr. Webb: This is precisely the type of unserious Washington infighting that turns the stomachs of ordinary voters. Even assuming that Mr. Webb's allegation were true, so what? No one cares whose idea it was; voters only care that it gets done. How ironic that Mr. Webb, a combat-injured Vietnam veteran who fancies himself a political outsider, would get himself so entrapped in inside-the-Beltway politics. |
Yes, the stealing and self-aggrandizement of Allen is fine, it is the petty squabling about it that will "turn the stomachs of ordinary voters". |

... yeeeah. Durbin's amendment had them as cosponsors. They're ass-backwards, once again.
I guess I was too early in saying none of the mainstream was carrying the story. I so rarely indulge the Washington Times, for obvious reasons. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth. | I'm having trouble figuring out if this is legitimately too stupid for words. I think it's getting close. It's like when those Phillipene legislators get pissed off at each other and start hucking microphone stands as weapons, and the rest of the world is just like 'lol wtf' and moves on to the next "tales of bizarro shit in backwards countries" news article. |

On the one hand, if Allen gets re-elected I'm making an executive decision to remove Virginia from the Union and suspend all diplomatic ties until the next election or it pulls its head out of its collective ass.
On the other, in early July Allen had a 16-point lead in polls over Webb and post-macaca-pre-amendment-thievery it had narrowed to almost nothing. So, they might be safe. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth.
