Considering that halloween is #2 behind christmas in terms of spending, it's pretty fucked up how sexist it has become.

Also, about that teacher, shitty stuff indeed.

Yeah sounds like the teacher should have no trouble winning a lawsuit...especially since she's not even asking for some ridiculous amount of money. Just reinstatement and back pay from time missed. Seriously, how many people don't milk those situations when they can?

As for costumes, yeah who knows how we got to this point. I feel it makes more and more people feel they HAVE to dress that way.

Granted, we can also look at it from the other side. I do know so many girls that enjoy getting to do that for the night though. It's similar to anime conventions in that people enjoy getting to do it for a special occasion without the fear that they'll be subject to constant slut-shaming as much. To some point, we all like opportunities to let down our guard. Doesn't change the fact that the holiday as a whole has become very sexist.

definitely, the teacher should win a lawsuit. and there should be a lawsuit, if only to educate the school officials on the reality of the internet.

Her lawyer, employment specialist Stewart Karlin, said all Webb’s photos on the Internet are unauthorized and altered, some showing her face with a different body.

“She had no control over it,” said Karlin, calling her termination “unconscionable.”

I know I'm going back quite a bit in the thread's history, but I just found another link on this. Short version, the rapist was accused under a very specific subsection of the law, which only applies to raping persons who are physically incapable of resisting. As the women was not physically incapable of resisting, the rapist was not guilty under that specific article. The problem here thus isn't that the courts said "it isn't rape if you don't fight back", but rather that another article should have been used for prosecuting this rape.

It's more a case of badly written laws (why not have one article that says "anything without consent is rape") and incompetent prosecutors. Still a bad story, but not as bad as it seems at first.[/url]

Yep pretty bad. I also like how a good part of the cases where false rape allegations are made are probably due to people like him. What do you think is going to happen if you push a puritanical worldview and tell young people that they are evil if they have sex ? Certainly none are going to freak when they find out they are pregnant and make bad decisions.

You're right but it makes it only more annoying that once again the system needs fixing and not just individuals.

@Samsally: Ughh. Fuck that guy.

If you honestly think that she was fired because of the pictures you need to take a deeper look.

Ha, what deeper look? I went over tons of news articles from all sources when first reading this, and not a single one of them mentioned anything else or any hint of reason she should be fired. In fact, the board met SPECIFICALLY to fire her BASED on the pictures...SOOOO, how is it not about that? That's the statement the school made. It might actually be about not wanting to give her tenure and pay her, but it was still the case that she was fired wrongly.

Maybe YOU should post why you think this isn't about her pictures. Because everything from her great record to the amount of times she was questioned about the photos and the statement of why she was fired BY the school points to this being the case.

I think it's about the tenure alone. A lot of people get fired right before tenure. They just have to find an excuse. That's what this was, just an excuse to fire her so she wouldn't get tenure.

Given your displayed lack of a grasp of basically every other social issue, and your complete callousness toward those with less than you, perhaps you should spend your time pondering that question you were asked elsewhere so you might come up with an answer rather than embarrassing yourself here again.

Yeeeeeah. I think it was obvious it was over tenure. If you notice, we mentioned that. That's kind of the general thought of the articles. The point is, they're trying to get away with cutting someone with a great record over something sexist, which is the general issue that's the problem. Basically, it's one thing if she actually had any reason to get fired...because when they're going to get tenure, if you fire someone without a good excuse, it's open for legality.

But we KNOW it's over the tenure thing. All sorts of businesses pull reasons out their ass to fire someone when it means they can save money. The issue is that those people can prove the reason they were fired for is BS...and thus can sue.

And in this case, the school board is arguing that her posing IS a good enough excuse to fire her. Her lawyer and most everyone who read those articles says...it's not.

In a school district in the city where the mayor is the tenth richest person in the US, think the fuck'er worth $12 billion and change. Wonder if he had anything thing to do with the low-income tax break on apartments for billionaires: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/billionaires-low-income-tax-breaks-194500791.html
