If we didn't have funky common names, spells would be really boring. Imagine all the sad little Books of Shadows that listed full latin names instead of things like 'Blood Drenched Baby Tears', or 'Dragon feet.'

I have to disagree. While the folk names for certain plants and herbs can be pretty cool, I think it would be pretty awesome if my book of shadows was written entirely in latin.

I have to agree with the scientific names in spellbooks. What if you end up using the wrong plant with an identical common name and getting a totally different spell effect?

yeah, names like witch hazel, bladderwack, mouse ear, solomon's seal, etc. are better than cardus benedictus (blessed thistle), scutellaria lateriflora (skullcap), and polygonum perscaria (heart's ease). Like I said, I love the folk names for these things, but if I knew latin and could read and write in latin, then it would be pretty sweet if all the spells in my book of shadows were in latin. You know, like how on Gargoyles all the spells are always in latin and it sounds all impressive and shit. fulmenos venite! sounds a hell of a lot better than come lightning!

the common/ folk names and the scientific latin name are usually both given

I never succeeded in making a book of shadows because I could never figure out what to put in here. I think I might make one as a book of poetry, though, to practice.

While the spells in Latin are impressive, I'd love to hear them portrayed in films with other ancient languages, like Brythonic. Or Etruscan. (I can't remember what the language they likely spoke was, but I'm pretty sure it was Etruscan.)

A friend of mine who studied Latin in a prep school used to volunteer in haunted houses. They apparently love you to death if you can babble convincingly in Latin while menacing guests. To me that is the coolest use of Latin!

were we talking about the mormon church here? well, we can talk about the mormon church here. they just excommunicated a woman for wanting them to open lay priesthood to women. in other words, the reward for a woman wanting to participate more fully in the mormon church is to throw her out of the church.

of course, i have revealed myself to be a horrible person because i am laughing that one of the things about excommunication is they say you can no longer wear magical mormon underwear.

but, you know - bigger issues!

magic temple garments!

that must be the biggest hassle of all, about getting excommunicated - you have to go shop for all new underwear.

you know, it just occurs to me...wonder if the new star wars movie will have some serious female jedis? like, leia being the new yoda?

'cause otherwise, converting to jedi isn't going to get mormon women too far ahead....

A nice comic I found which underlines why feminism is important for men

Sadly not trans inclusive.

if only there was a place a question like this could be asked!
