I blame corn.

Father hacks Wind Waker to re-write the game dialog so that his daughter can actually play as a girl.

That's pretty awesome, and a lot of work. That man deserves a "World's Greatest Dad" coffee mug.

That guy is my new hero Smile

Quote:
Hoye eventually decided to hack away at the actual text of the story, producing a female-oriented version by altering the game's data files. According to his blog post on the project, Hoye took a GameCube disk image (.GCM) of Wind Waker and dug into it with a hex editor. He changed all story text and dialogue by hand, then tested his work by playing the game file in the Dolphin GameCube emulator.

The modifications proved a bit tricky, since the new female-oriented wording had to be a byte-for-byte alteration of the original; even throwing in "she" in place of "he" would mess things up. So Hoye got creative, using words like “milady” in place of “my lad” and “master."

“Sentences need to be changed or reworded just because 'young lady' is one character longer than 'young man,' line breaks need to be in about the right places, that sort of thing,” Hoye told Ars via e-mail.

If you've ever edited anything with a hex editor (for example to change the amount of money you had in a Theme Park save game *cough*) you'll know how tricky this is. Not that it's complex or particularly difficult, it's just that you're allowed zero mistakes.

I love it.

Different game, but I felt Twilight Princess did a decent job of incorporating a number of female characters into the story. Midna in particular was a fantastic character. In fact, I would pay some serious money to play a Legend of Zelda game with Midna as the main character.

I _love_ the editing. I would also like way more female characters as first person, non talking characters. Seriously, why not? And why can't Link be a girl?

And more female player-characters that are dressed realistically, instead of in a body-hugging, skin-baring fashion.

Old version - INEFFECTIVE!

Newer version: Effective!

Oh, I usually call that dressed up so as not to encourage self-image issues with younger teens.

Wouldn't call either pic realistic though.

Thanks for the clarification.

This isn't just dress up - ARMOR should cover the freakin body. Period. It is only in the last few years that females in any RPG or in comics had outfits that would cover vital organs. That makes it not armor. The Witchblade pictures are the perfect example of that.

The self image issues comes in when females are treated as objects to the point of eliminating the usefulness of the armor they wear. See how that works?

As far as realistic is concerned, the second picture's outfit could actually be used in battle though I would recommend a helmet.

Hell, everyone knows that the person wearing the least amount of armour/clothing will win the fight.

It's a basic fact of the universe.
