A lot of countries, or smaller municipalities within countries, put extra tax on things that are decadent, wasteful, or potentially harmful, which are colloquially called "sin taxes." Liquor here has a roughly 20.4% tax (last I checked), compared with a standard sales tax of 8.8%. Cellphones and cigarettes are similarly taxed. Of course, the popularity of such taxes has nothing to do with anything.

Re: rape culture, ShadowCell gave a good explanation of what the term means:

when people call our culture a "rape culture," it's pretty much analogous to what people mean when they say we've got a "culture of violence." it doesn't mean we all publicly and explicitly condone rape, anymore than we publicly and explicitly condone violence of any other sort; what it means is that aspects of our culture serve to encourage and cover up sexual violence despite official condemnation of it.

I don't think they're the same account. Yeah, it's a convenient explanation, and it's definitely worth half the chuckle to think of the poor sot that feverishly whips themselves between logins and personalities. In their mind, they're some master puppeteer; in truth, they're a can of Chunky Vegetable soup fired all over the floor.

I've been trying to think of a title for these folks that pop up every week or so to chime in. I was thinking martyr, but that takes away from folks that suffer for notable causes. Or kamikaze; but they, too, had a point. Chump is too generic; after all, they're volunteering to get their asses kicked. So I said to myself, 'Me, what sort of thing puts on a cheap display for a short time, has an odor to it, and leaves unpleasant marks?' I ignored the first answer (Look in the mirror, fucker) and went with the second:

Congratulations, Frijo Lay, you're the first of what I'm sure will be many more to receive the Sidewalk Snake of Futility. Keep fighting the pointless fight.

I'll label you wrong. I love the TROLL BAD TROLL arguement. Keep patting yourself on the back because on the internet you just have to think you are right. No need to argue any of the points I've said here is a picture for you.

lol for reals

there doesn't seem to be much about Sinfest that you do like. maybe you should stop reading it and go read another webcomc. otherwise your complaints are pretty hollow, because obviously there's something you want to see in it, or else you wouldn't keep coming back and reading it.

also lol at idea that England is a totalitarian nightmare because it stopped charging you a "pastry tax" and America is therefore the best country in the world forever because while we charge you liquor taxes and gas taxes and all at least we don't charge you a pastry tax (in most states)

Woah woah for one thing I don't Pay for any of england's taxes you all do the tax payer Very Happy . Well maybe I do a little whatever of my tax money goes to this.

Can we discuss my hollow complaints. I kinda feel some of the posters have assumed things without just trying to talk about it. What makes this web arc so good? Why is it funny or interesting? Why are people reacting so strongly. The most I've liked about the new arc is the devil girl the one that speaks badly. I like the development of the devil kid. The tricycles not a fan. I mean I like the character concept I'm just not finding the matrix code sight entertaining.

How can you suggest I move to another comic? It's one bad story arc I think I can wait for it to get better. Some of your comments to me seem crazy.

What compelled me to post here was because I was curious what his comicbook ment and saw all the posts. He used to post the resistance and I think it was something about him being picked up commercially. I thought maybe some deals with Dark Horse went bad. Instead I got people talking about rape, fu fanboys, and if you like the old stuff you just wanted to see sexy sex.

i can quite easily suggest you go read another comic. it's shockingly simple. here, watch me do it again: go read another comic. again: go read another comic. i'll even do it a third time: go read another comic. it's incredibly super hyper easy. it's even easier because you aren't paying anything for it and have no investment in it whatsoever, so you can leave and come back in a year or so and maybe he'll be making nothing but rape torture splatter porn or whatever it is you want.

also i find it hard to believe i'm somehow paying taxes in England, being a United States citizen who has in fact never actually been to England. those English, though, can't trust the bastards, if they can get people who aren't their citizens and don't even live in England to pay their pastry taxes, well, have to wonder how come they lost their empire.

i mean here you are confused that people are actually talking about the issues and messages made in the comic. which is, acrimonious as it's been, still probably better than what this forum used to be.

There's simply been a recent influx in the amount of people protesting their lack of interest in the recent arc - some of the regulars here debate with these people. When someone else joins to do likewise there's a certain level of antagonism aimed towards the poster, but if you're genuinely here with an open mind to discussion and debate and not just here to 'make everyone see things your way', (which i'm not accusing you of, but some in the past are guilty of) the antagonism abates.

You just started on a bad note. You sounded pretty at odds for a first post, so it seemed more likely you were one of the many people that seem to be the same person. Also there are some people that do like to create random accounts to troll the forums and get people upset. And you started off pretty negative in everything you said, with lots of comments that seemed like you were trying to make a fuss. The rape topic you were reading you shouldn't take as it was...as Ashland was saying most of that sarcastically trying to get under people's skin, etc. There's a lot of back history on the forums from some people. You were getting too caught up in it taking it at face value.

I wasn't saying that I didn't believe the pastry tax existing either. I'd heard about it. I meant by my comment that there are far more worse things you could be referencing, because a lot of supposedly civilized governments do a lot of terrible things to their countries without ever making huge news about it. That's all.

Either way, I'm not defending this arc to death. It's not perfect. But the truth is, nothing we say here changes much. He doesn't really seem to read the forums very often. And he does things his own way. I do enjoy it though, but you should probably realize that Sinfest has changed a little, even if it might go back to more jokes at some point, Tat has obviously decided to do more story elements. He was most likely getting bored with the "joke a day" style and decided to start longer story arcs. It's really not that bad, considering how much he updates. You know how much story he covers compared to other webcomics? =P

*edit*

This was supposed to pop in right after frijolefrito...but seems the website had an error or something. That was weird. It did appear...just not for awhile.

Even on apple turnovers? What about empanadas?

Edited for context.

What would the pastry tax money go towards? I feel like that's important.

i will pile it into a big swimming pool and swim in it

then i will commission a series of robot submarines that could be used to explore the ocean floor. then i will reject them. then i will build a submarine that can take me to the ocean floor. then i will take away all of the world's child pornography and get in my submarine and leave it all in the Challenger Deep, to be destroyed by deep-sea pressure. then i will come back up, sell the submarine, and use the proceeds to bankroll assorted feminist organizations and causes.

i will do all of this solely to piss off Guest.
