all you need is a stove and a pan if you have one. the best toasted cheese sandwiches use two types of cheese 1 really cheap and greasy one, one flavorful and good one, think like a cheap kraft sharp cheddar if you can find it and a good white cheddar to compliment it. Start off by cooking the two pieces of bread with the cheap cheese on it, wait til its melted and then flip them over quickly and flip them back (make sure its on really high heat). Basically, this sears the cheese so it does not stick, as well as coating the pan with the flavorful cheese grease, add on the flavorful cheese, put the bread together to make the sandwich and then fry the sandwich quickly in some of the cheese grease. That way you have this really flavorful, crunchy, salty, cheesy bread with a nice smooth flavorful filling. its awesome. _________________ Marriage begins with a man on his knees giving a woman jewelry and asking for permission to do something. I disagree.
My favorite way is to just put together a sandwich with some thinly sliced cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, and swiss are all fantastic for this) and some sort of fatty spread like ranch dressing or mayonnaise and then just fry the dang thing with a bit of vegetable oil. Flip once. Tomato put in between the thin cheese slices before frying or avocado put on top afterwards improve the quality of the sandwich. I also prefer the way a nonstick pan cooks the sandwich to the way a cast iron skillet would. Using low heat and covering the pan might be necessary to fully melt the cheese this way, especially if you put in a couple tomato slices/w/e
this should go without saying, but when frying with low heat be careful not to use too much oil _________________ butts |

Utopian toast is the best, but good luck finding a place that serves it. |

I've recently become a fan of smoked gouda, which accents cheddar nicely on a toasted/grilled cheese sandwich. It's also surprisingly cheap around here (well, compared with my favorite cheese, an aged cheddar with caramelized onions). Ditto on the tomato slices, though. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth. speaking of cheese, I'm a pretty big fan of brie and port
I don't think that would make for a very good fried sandwich, though _________________ butts

I am so hungry right now it isn't even funny.
The sad part is I'm probably just going to go home and eat pudding because cooking food takes time. _________________ Samsally the Gray |

if you want the nice strong flavour of a good brie in a sandwich, use a weaker blue cheese. also- samsally, cooking takes a lot less time once you get used to it, after a bit of making the same recipe you can usually crank out dinner in about 20-25 minutes which is about as much time as a normal city/country dweller would need to go find something. _________________ Marriage begins with a man on his knees giving a woman jewelry and asking for permission to do something. i personally am in favor of a good melty cheddar (the cheddar with onions sounds fabulous), or maybe monterey jack (if that's the mood i'm in) and slices of tomato - two layers of cheese with the tomato between so it all sticks together. but i fry mine in butter. ideally, it should be done in some sort of grill press - not those new-fangled panini things, one of those waffle irons with reversible plates so it's all smooshed into a nice solid package. (yes, i know i could do it with two iron frying pans, but then i have to clean up two pans).
or quesadillas. quesadillas are good. in fact, quesadilas may be dinner. _________________ aka: neverscared! |
