I believe the practice originated among pilots in WWI who would paint their "kills" on the side of their planes. given the reference, I would imagine she painted them on herself and that they are not stickers that she purchased.
*edit: please feel free to correct my history if I'm wrong, I didn't bother looking anything up, I just pulled it from the tangled mess of my thoughts and memories.
