[quote="that just leaves the question of "who the fuck is sister rosalyn"[/quote]
I think this refers to Calvin's "terror" babysitter! ( I think your reference was from the Calvin strip where our Glossie asks him why he doesn't take on Moe instead of throwing snow balls at his neighbour). I loved that cross reference too!
And am totally kicked with Tat giving us a teaser. He's given us two names. Will he continue it? Will he not? We'll find out, same time, same day, Next week! _________________ Can I get a What what? |

So I was going back through this thread, which I hadn't really bothered with, and found this gem, which is just . . .
| Inkmonkey wrote: | | Sam wrote: | | If you really wanted to construct a list of the pillars of male privilege, pornography and prostitution wouldn't even rank. They wouldn't even vanish as a result of complete gender parity in society, soooooo |
Glossy and her comrades doesn't understand gender discrimination at all...prostitution and pornography aren't its root, they are just manifestations that happen in societies that are rich enough to afford to spend money on sex.
For a start, a lot of people who strongly discriminates women hates sex, specially pornography and prostitution. Just read some religious book. Any religious book.
Second, women were discriminated long before there existed money, or clothes or proffesional artists. Go read a book about the yanomami, for example.
Third gays like gay porn...do they discriminate themselves?.
Fourth, even if people found a way to reproduce without sex, and all men in the world were hypnotized to become gay, hence removing the need and desire for heterosexual sex, that doesn't mean they would become respectful to women...gays can be every inch as chauvinist as heterosexual men.
Women have been discriminated for social an economic reasons, because any group that has a disvantage (like being smaller, with shorter arms and hence able to wield a club or throw a spear or draw a bow with less power) will be quickly pushed down and exploited. |
My only thoughts are "God bless the American education system!" to which I then add "Lord knows it needs all the help it can get." _________________

Maybe it's just me, but it sounds more like you're referring to call girls than to prostitutes. I'm pretty sure there's a difference. | Other than their service's price I don't think there's any difference at all. |
Well, the price part was kind of my point. Your posts state that prostitutes make lots of money when (unless I'm wrong) it's actually call girls who make lots of money. And AFAIK legalizing prostitution wouldn't affect call girlism (?) one way or the other.
So, the two jobs can't be considered basically the same job inasmuch as one is illegal and the other (the one that generally makes more money) is legal. That was my point, such as it was.
I'm presuming there are various reasons that women who become prostitutes (which is illegal and doesn't tend to pay much) don't become call girls (which is legal and does tend to pay a fair amount) instead.
Unless those issues are addressed, why would such women be able to get legal jobs as prostitutes when they already can't get legal jobs as call girls?
I'm pretty sure that if they could obtain legal employment of any sort (including call girl jobs), many prostitutes would never have become prostitutes in the first place.
So if prostitution becomes another form of legal employment, it just becomes one more job that those particular women, due to whatever factors (how should I know?) resulted in them entering the illegal field of prostitution to begin with, won't be able to obtain, right? Or not? |

Just thought I could add something to this conversation.
Where I'm from, prostitution in any shape, coming from either the fancy call girls, brothel prostitutes or the street workers, is legal as long as there is no pimp involved. I also wondered the reason for that same thing you propose, and I think that the answer is kind of simple:
Street workers are easier to find, cheaper and, in a way, more private. During some nights, it becomes impossible to go through certain areas without seeing them, which I believe also makes them more accessible. In other words, their client base becomes larger. This is pure speculation and could very well be wrong, though |

On another note, when I look at that first panel, I keep getting the split-second impression that she's wearing some kind of chicken face-mask because in black-and-white it's not obvious that what looks like the mask's "comb" is actually her jagged Simpsonesque hair. Anyone else get that impression?
Similarly, her dark glasses look like a mask throughout the whole strip. To me, anyway.
I hadn't initially realized that "Xanthe" could be considered a color reference. If that's the case, is there some way "Tess" can be considered a color reference too? If not, well, you can already tell that they're anarchists, there's no pattern to their names like there is with Devil Girls*.
Some time Baby Blue should review several character files on her laptop, including nameless characters, and clue us in (to that extent).

*except for Pebbles, of course, and even that hasn't been confirmed to be her "real" name |

We've had some long discussions here about this, but it pretty much goes like this: Most people treat sex workers as less than human and/or with lots and lots of prejudices, including treatment by fellow sex workers. Sex workers cover porn stars, prostitutes, strippers, and essentially anyone else who sells their body (or an image thereof) as their vocation.
Long story short, prostitution DOES NOT work in the manner you describe, well it doesn't 99% of the time. If it always (or at least mostly) worked like you describe AND people treated sex workers no differently because of their vocations, then the issues kind of vanish.
However, I think what the strip is talking about is "porn culture", something that effectively propagates sexist views and opinions. _________________

Well that and the upsurge of "amateur slash revenge" porn sites where douchebags upload video and pictures of their SO's without that person knowing about it.
Google "is anybody up" for a pretty decent overview.
(if the site is still up and it comes up in the google search i'd say itd be nsfw but as the owner is under litigation right now it should have a bunch of other articles on it.) _________________

Oh, I never said the opposite. In fact I was going to add the fact that street workers have it specially bad since, because of those prejudices, they are bound to be assaulted by degenerated assholes with a problem with the profession.
However, I do guess that sometimes circumstances create necessity, and if that necessity is most easily fulfilled by taking risks, a lot of people is willing to do so. |

I'm just wondering why she's wearing safety goggles under the full face mask. A bit redundant isn't it? _________________ I aim to misbehave |

I think those are supposed to be sunglasses, like (almost?) all Sisterhood Sisters wear. Hers are just in a different style.
Hey, Slick almost never takes his sunglasses off, what works for him can work for others. |

Aren't their sunglasses/goggles "patriarchy blockers"? i.e. protection from a completely different threat? _________________ BOHICA, Latin, second person imperative of the first conjugation verb bohicō, bohicāre, bohicāvī, bohicātum “Bend over, here it comes again” |

I hear the name Tess, and I recall a joke being made on a TV show about it making a good Drag Queen name... Tess Tosterone.
Still...not a bad name. |
At least it's not Tess Tickles |
