| I just had a looksee through the archives and I think what appeals me most to old Sinfest are the same things that would, as in that comic, remind me of Bloom County. |

What I think lends an extra level to this rather basic gag is that, as 'Nique laughs at herself, Slick is laughing with her (okay, there's no literal laughter, but the principle is the same), not at her. I'd think that two people would have to be very good friends for there to be a moment like that. |

It's perfectly natural for Tat to have his characters explore new facets and interpretations of themselves as they discover different world perspectives. Just as others have pointed out, this stronger feminist take of 'Nique isn't really that far of a cry from who she has always been. Her personality hasn't changed she's just a bit more self-aware and looks at how she interacts with the world in a different way and is trying to adjust appropriately.
I've always seen Sinfest as a satirical mockery of the misogyny, hedonism, racism, and rampant "corruption" that makes society so great (for comedy). My only gripe I suppose would be that the direct feminist angle that's currently being taken removes some of the subtlety from the comic. Before we'd have Slick leering at 'Nique's ass and us laughing at how shallow he is. Now we get the Sisterhood glaring at him and directly pointing out his sexist misogyny and female objectification with a huge neon sign. While it's still funny the humor doesn't feel quite as clever or layered to me. But perhaps it's not that it's not as clever but rather it's just different.
I suppose it could be argued that the situation we run into now is that Sinfest has always been filled with childishly misogynist male characters. With the exception of maybe Crim, every long running male character has been a cartoonish vessel for male objectification of women. So for 'Nique and the Sisterhood to validly "attack" these men over what is essentially a huge part of their personalities (1) puts them at odds to such an extent to which some readers might find uncomfortable or (2) opens up their viewpoint to criticism as being straw feminism. However neither of these points necessitates Tat dropping this feminist angle or even changing it. Plus you could just as easily say that Slick is a straw misogynist. Comic characters are meant to be blatant exaggerations of stereotypes, philosophies, or cultural norms.
Either way, I know that many readers over the years could have been interpreting what many saw as satire as blatant "HA HA girls ARE hot and/or stupid!" (because that is their viewpoint) or perhaps are uncomfortable with the comic now due to the possibility that they themselves might harbor male bias on some level. Those individuals should not let that get in the way of their enjoyment of the current strips.
If Sinfest is making you frustrated or annoyed on this front then Tat is just doing his job and his art is getting even better at challenging it's audience to think AND laugh. |

I was with you until "Her personality hasn't changed". My whole initial point in this is that, leaving the feminism thing aside, her personality has changed and a lot. Ronald excessively pointed out examples that show us that it is a fact.
I have to concede, though, Tat has evidently gone through efforts of self-improvement(I mean, viewing those old strips you come to realize just how sketchy they were in comparison) and I can't blame him for attempting to change perspectives and viewpoints in their characters, even if a lot of what makes them is dropped in the process. |

I guess I saw 'Nique as not just being whimsical but just being multi-faceted and always in search of an identity. She's always been annoyed with men objectifying her. The only difference is that before she owned it and made it her "thing" where as now she's rejecting the objectification and seeking a new identity that denies it. She's always tried to be a rebel in some way shape or form and this is her way of doing that now. Not that I'm dismissing it as a phase though.
*shrug* Granted I am aware my view could easily be dismissed as a huge over-rationalization of her character growth. |
