Thaksin had called for the April elections, three years early, after opponents accused the billionaire leader of abusing the country's system of checks and balances and bending government policy to benefit his family's business.

So either the guy had the people or the counters in his pocket (assuming the abuse is real). Even if he did have everyone in his pocket, it at least sounds good to call for another vote.

...

When do we get a coup?

*edit

also, ya gotta love the happy note the article ends on:

Quote:
Thailand has seen dozens of government coups since the end of World War II. But this is the first since 1992, AP reported.

Some Thais gathered outside Government House in Bangkok to get pictures of themselves with the tanks and troops, AP reported.

The coup caused little stir in Bangkok's popular tourist districts, where foreigners packed beer bars and cabarets just a few miles from where the tanks were posted, AP reported.

The army commanders say they will merely serve as a caretaker government and that democratic elections will be held soon.

Uh...we'll see.

I saw a travel advisory put out yesterday for Thailand and today a new regime. Bizarre indeed.

I hope they are more children friendly than the last lot. Did you hear at Xmas all they got was a wave.

Is it really okay to make tsunami jokes that don't involve where the red cross is hiding all the money?

Well they did have 18 military coups in some 60 years and they still have a civilian governement, so changes are it will happen again this time.

Seriously. Nicest coup ever.

Quote:
"The armed forces commander and the national police commander have successfully taken over Bangkok and the surrounding area in order to maintain peace and order. There has been no struggle," the coup announcement said, according to The Associated Press. "We ask for the cooperation of the public and ask your pardon for the inconvenience."

These guys can take over this country any day.
