oh and my mom's family's take on the coup (all being from thailand): "well, life as usual."

i think the westerners -here- are more concerned with the idea of a coup than the thai are..

Yes, but will the Milatary government make a smooth transition back to a civilian one, bridled with power like they are?

Let's not make blanket assertions. They may just shoe themselves to be responsible and working in the best interest of the nation.

I'm suprised not one of you have brought up that the general leading the coup actually went to see the king before hand to get permission for it. The king gave his blessing. If only the US had a king someone could have a chat to.......
