I agree that the porn industry is terrible but I still don't like these strips. Too general.

I like how strips with these two tend to showcase how patient and calm she is, like no matter how obnoxious and stupid he gets she just calmly listens to what he has to say though refuting anything he's seriously wrong about or trying to seriously talk to him about his problem with porn on a personal level.

But I don't really... like... how many there are that just exist to talk about how bad the porn industry is? Like, it is, but, like you said.. they're too general and they all kind of say the exact same thing and it's kinda ... uninteresting? Like, with all the resources and possibilities in the world and with all his skill, Tat could have written and drawn a strip far more interesting and informational than these tend to be?

And I'm most certainly not looking forward to the discussion that's going to show up in this thread. I'm really not.

While I think it may go for the same dead horse as far as "message", I think we're getting too obsessed with whether each strip has an agenda or is just more banter between characters like it's been for years. This strip is more or less just more funny debate between these two...Because honestly, how few people REALLY can get to Squigly. I seriously thought that last panel, watching him get more annoyed while she pretty much trolls him was hilarious.

The subject is covered a lot, but we haven't really caught up on Squig and Curly lately, and the strip IS funny- whether you disagree or agree with the points made is up to you, but I think it's worth a laugh.

There is very little in the porn industry marketed towards women (if we assume that women can, in general, be said to have different tastes in porn than what is mainstream and male oriented).

I suppose the same thing could be said for romance novels, but typically romance novels aren't quite as controversial as porn.

This is a classic fallacy.
The existence of a bad majority does not mean a sweeping generalization can be made.

It's like how racists use IQ or crime statistics to justify their beliefs. The simple fact is that one or any number of bad apples does not spoil the bunch.

Things are bad individually, not in groups.

yo hydra before you go spouting off about fallacies you should probably make sure you're not committing any in the act of spouting off about fallacies

sincerely, your friend "false analogy"

p.s. if you actually have a "bad majority" of something then you can indeed make a general claim about it, by saying that the majority of those things are bad. not every generalization is a fallacious one, hence why the fallacies of generalization are qualified the way they are.

I know which discussion you're talking about (or maybe not -- there are many dreadful conversations that this sort of strip might generate), and I find myself wondering if it's already started. I see some things that might be seeds for it but also maybe not. Hm.

what does it entail and what about it makes it more "female friendly"

This strip can be taken in 2 different ways.

First you can take it at face value and just laugh at the funny interaction between Squiggy and Curly. (This is the route I'm going to take)

Second is you can try and dig deeper into it for a hidden meaning and what you'll end up with is an artist whose been buying too much into how the media has portrayed the porn industry.

Bad porn only exists where regulations aren't in place. Put those regulations in place, make it a safe, healthy environment, and you won't get bad porn anymore. I blame the government for turning a blind eye and wanting to have nothing to do with an industry they could clean up, make proper and save than anything else.

Because as much as some people hate it, despise it, and wish for it to disappear... so long as we have sex for the sheer pleasure of having sex, porn will always exist. The best we can do is manage it so that it's a clean, safe and healthy environment for those that go into the business.

A) I am soooo shipping these two....

B) On a point made earlier in this thread, the only thing you can say about something whose majority of applications is bad is...(*drumroll*) that the majority of its applications are bad. If it is possible to have even one single possible good application/manifestation then the above-mentioned something isn't 'bad'. It just manifests itself in a bad way, most of the times.

Whether you want to call such a case 'generally bad', or 'mostly bad', or '99% bad' is up to your personal dictionary. Stil doesn't qualify as 'pure' bad.

This isn't actually a generalisation, it's just a quick way of adressing the related statistics. The generalisation is only made when assuming that you can deal in the same way with something that is 99% bad as with something that's 100% bad.
